The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Perioperative Services is seeking 100%
Surgical Technologist I or II for the Gynecology Team
. Surgical Technologists assist with surgical procedures, provision of therapeutic, preventive, and emergency patient care duties. Prepare, operate, and maintain routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies and implants. All duties are done under the direction of a registered professional nurse.
- Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team
- Serves as primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns or new staff
- Serves on shared governance committee, POD committee or EBP workgroup
- Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room
- Understands the principles of medical and surgical asepsis; recognizes and communicates breaks in aseptic technique
- Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants (E/I/S/I)
- Understands various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation to anticipate needs during surgery and improve workflow
- Competent in performance of delegated technical functions and clinical activities, in accordance with institutional policy
- Facilitates patient care with regard to the patient s condition and age
- Collaborates with peers to maintain the sterile field and report incidents to the surgeon
- Participates in collaborative review of pertinent patient information for accuracy of procedure
- Assists in revising or updating care plans for new procedures or surgeons
- Organizes and reviews instrument trays and supply shelves
- Organizes and maintains trial or specialty equipment, supplies, or instrument items
- Displays critical thinking and anticipates patient and surgeon needs
- Takes preventative action on potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents
- Provides documentation according to department/division standard with the Registered Nurse
- Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the unit(s) supported
- Precepts new staff and/or student technologists in scrubbing duties
- Mentors new employees and other surgical team members
- Practices standard precautions in infection control
- Follows changes in patient care protocol based on research findings
- Participates in unit staff meetings and in-service programs
- Participates in perioperative initiatives or shared governance committees
- Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned
- Ensures daily unit documentation/tasks are completed, including case reviews for procedure, implants and supplies
- Communicates with surgeons regarding implants, instruments or supplies for future cases
- Organize/revise specialty carts, care plans or service line information
- Organize and provide specialty in-services
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts , rotating days off. On-call rotation for nights and weekends. Holiday rotation.

- Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist.
- Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT).
- Two years experience as a Surgical Technologist
- Preferred candidates will have direct patient care experience in an operating room.
- Experience working in a healthcare environment.
- Ability to scrub surgical procedures.
- Strong written communication skills
- Demonstrates customer service and service recovery

The Perioperative Department will be filling 100% position at one of two levels. The Surgical Technologist I classification salary range is dependent upon percentage starting at $48,650.40 to $66,377.52; the Surgical Technologist II classification range is dependent upon percentage started at $53,181.36 to $72,474.48. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (Surgical Technologist I or Surgical Technologist II) you wish to be considered for or indicate both.
