Physician Assistant - Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa
Basic FunctionProvide patient care for the adult outpatient Oncology service. The PA performs direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services, exercising autonomy in medical decision making under the attending physician. Plan, deliver, and evaluate the health care required by the patient, consistent with accreditation guidelines. The PA works weekday clinic hours in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
Responsibilities- Perform overall medical care and medical management in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Clinic under the attending physician, exercising independence in medical decision‑making and services.
- Document initial evaluation of new and returning patients, including complete history and physical examination and appropriate orders.
- Collaborate/consult for care coordination, including chemotherapy management, infusions, minor procedures and interventions.
- Use judgment to provide continuity of care, encouraging best practices.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat medical conditions and record findings in the EMR.
- Discuss testing and treatment options and the associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients and families.
- Maintain knowledge of accrediting bodies’ expectations and use technology, conferences, and CEU opportunities to update knowledge.
- Coordinate or deliver services to patients requiring continuing care; refer to appropriate clinicians as indicated.
- Perform procedures as training and privileging allow for the adult population at UI Health Care.
- Document medical records, clinic notes, and procedure notes, and submit charges for services rendered.
- Be available for weekend or extended work hours when needed in a scheduled rotation.
- Participate in quality, safety, and process improvement activities.
- Provide health education to patients and families.
- Support clinical education for trainees and serve on committees to enhance patient care.
- Participate in UI Health Care APP Council and professional activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.
- Compliance with Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners registration and licensure requirements, including graduation from an accredited PA program and/or NCCPA certification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- 1–3 years experience in internal medicine or related specialty area or demonstrated knowledge gained through educational program or clinical rotations.
- Experience in working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision‑making in an outpatient setting.
