Senior/Communication Infrastructure Engineer – University of Iowa
University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems invites you to join our team as a Communication Infrastructure Engineer or Senior Communication Infrastructure Engineer. This role involves the design, analysis, performance, and maintenance of communication systems infrastructure, including pathways, spaces, telecommunication rooms, equipment rooms, data centers, media cabling, and communications equipment to support voice, data, wireless, video, paging, CATV, nurse call, and other services at the University Hospital and clinics.
Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) provides and supports information and communication systems and technology that facilitate quality patient care, progressive medical education, and innovative research.
Position Responsibilities- Maintain quality and quantity standards, procedures, and guidelines for the design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of information transport systems.
- Assist with creation of installation and implementation policies and procedures.
- Assist with the development of UIHC specific communication contractor qualifications.
- Recommend measures to improve service, equipment performance, scheduling, quality control, efficiency, and safety.
- Work with Capital Management, end users, architects, engineers, and vendors regarding application, design, and installation of infrastructure for communication services.
- Assist with design, implementation, and maintenance of the DAS solution.
- Determine appropriate architecture, topology, and transmission requirements for voice and data cabling systems based on established departmental and industry guidelines and standards.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend new products or techniques related to communications infrastructure.
- Keep abreast of trends and technical developments in the field.
- Provide recommendations regarding product solutions.
- Ensure compliance with industry, regulatory, department, and institution installation standards.
- Follow policies and procedures in accordance with the guidelines of The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and HCIS/Communication Technology Services.
- Interpret, comprehend, and implement design documents for capital projects.
- Provide hands‑on technical installation assistance and oversight as needed.
- Implement preventive maintenance programs of information transport systems.
- Maintain the CTS Design Reference Manual.
- Document cable plant in PCR
360. - Manage and store cabling test results for compliance.
- Maintain the Division 27 specifications for capital projects.
- Keep knowledge of how individual instruments and tools work.
- Provide quality control during capital construction projects and report discrepancies.
- Create construction documents as needed for project teams.
- Develop project budgets for cabling systems.
- Implement troubleshooting procedures to maintain service delivery levels.
- Work with vendors regarding purchases of supplies, tools, and services.
- Participate in construction design meetings, representing infrastructure and cabling system requirements.
- Assist in the coordination of training and technical sessions for HCIS, CTS and contracted staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of overall HCIS/Communication Technology Services activities.
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Communication Engineer: 1‑3 years of installation and support of communication infrastructures, including terminations and splicing fiber and/or copper.
- Senior Communication Engineer: 4‑7 years of design, installation, and support of communication infrastructures.
- Knowledge of applicable network cabling industry standards.
- Experience troubleshooting cable plant problems (supporting voice, data, DAS, and A/V) using appropriate equipment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience working independently and in a team environment.
- Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring to other technical staff.
- A valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety requirements.
- BICSI certification.
- Experience in a healthcare or health industry environment.
- Knowledge of and experience interpreting and implementing EIA and TIA infrastructure standards and guidelines.
- Knowledge of commercial building, fire, and electrical codes.
- Experience with Visio & Bluebeam.
- Experience with terminations and splicing fiber and/or copper.
- Pay Level: 4B
- Starting Salary Minimum: $65,117
