Physician Assistant – Pediatric Oncology, Stem Cell Transplant, and Cellular Therapies

Join the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa as a Physician Assistant in Pediatric Oncology, Stem Cell Transplant, and Cellular Therapies. In collaboration with attending physicians, you will provide comprehensive clinical care to patients with cancer and recipients of bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapies within the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation/Oncology. You will conduct history and physical assessments, establish diagnoses, order and evaluate diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans in accordance with state law, regulations, institutional policies, and practice agreements.

Position

Responsibilities
  • Function independently or as part of an interdisciplinary team to evaluate, plan, and deliver care to patients, obtaining and documenting health history and performing comprehensive or focused physical examinations.
  • Provide primary, acute, and complex care, manage overall patient care, initiate referrals and consultations, and identify expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Order, perform, interpret, and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures.
  • Form differential diagnoses and treat acute and chronic oncologic conditions.
  • Prescribe therapeutic interventions, including pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and procedural modalities, to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Become competent in ordering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, managing associated side effects.
  • Complete clinical training in lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations to obtain additional privileges.
  • Utilize evidence‑based practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Provide specialty‑specific consultation services within scope of practice.
  • Facilitate patient transitions among healthcare settings, including admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Participate in departmental educational conferences and clinical care meetings and accurately document patient care in the electronic medical record and other records for compliance and billing.
Education Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited PA education program and/or hold certification by the NCCPA.
  • Maintain active registration and licensure in the State of Iowa.
Experience Requirements
  • Experience in the clinical care of pediatric patients.
  • Ability to work independently with indirect supervision and demonstrate critical‑thinking/problem‑solving skills.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Eligibility for, or possession of, a federal DEA license.
Desired Qualifications
  • One to three years of experience in pediatric care or evidence of advanced knowledge in pediatric care.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplantation.
  • Experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in pediatrics and oncology/BMT.
  • Experience in ambulatory care settings.
  • Proficiency in PALS/ACLS.
