Hospital Communications Specialist - Medical Center Downtown (3rd Shift)
University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Hospital Communications Specialist to coordinate emergency communication responses, screen and direct hospital paging and call center communications, and maintain the hospital paging system and related hardware and software.
Responsibilities- Coordinate response of internal and external staff to multiple types of emergency situations.
- Facilitate medical communications during emergency situations.
- Execute hospital-wide communication procedures for major system outages, inclement weather, and disaster situations.
- Monitor alarms and provide emergency escalation for alarms.
- Maintain the release of information status in the patient profile in the hospital inpatient directory.
- Assist users with service and information related to communication technologies.
- Provide call processing and on‑call services for outside and affiliated agencies.
- Screen calls and direct communications among faculty, staff, students, patients, visitors, law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
- Place long distance and international calls.
- Establish multiple‑party conference calls and monitor calls.
- Respond to incoming calls on the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf.
- Operate and maintain the Amcom call processing system.
- Operate and maintain the Hospital Paging System and Pagers.
- Understand and apply basic knowledge of computer technology and various software packages.
- Maintain unit quality control.
- Provide input in the development of unit policies and procedures.
- Perform job functions efficiently and effectively.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Any combination of clerical experience and/or college or university coursework equivalent to two years of full‑time employment.
- Experience (typically 3‑6 months) in a call center or equivalent communications environment using computerized systems and involving responses to immediate decision and action demands.
- In‑depth knowledge of unit, department and institutional routines, functions, policies, procedures and forms.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of telecommunication systems and ability to operate systems efficiently.
- Skill in utilizing a computer, software, online systems, and conventional office equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff, public in a variety of situations.
- Ability to work in a high intensity environment.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and daily tasks.
- Ability to read, interpret and accurately execute oral and written instruction and exercise judgment in its application.
- Ability to document information timely and accurately.
- Ability to work effectively in a noisy environment.
- Good hand‑eye coordination, manual dexterity, and ability to execute oral and written instructions.
Grade: 10
Salary: $42,699.60 per year
During Initial Training: 0800 – 0500 Mon‑Fri
During Continued Training: 1500 – 2130 Mon‑Fri
Schedule After Training: 2200 – 0630 Mon‑Fri (including occasional holidays)
Flexibility for coverage and on‑call as necessary.
