SummaryThe Lab Testing and Fabrication Technician is responsible for supporting mechanical and environmental engineering validation activities. This role builds and modifies test fixtures, operates specialized test equipment, performs fabrication and machining work, and maintains laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and efficient testing operations. The Technician works closely with engineers to execute test plans, document results, and troubleshoot equipment or sample issues.
Job DutiesPerform mechanical and environmental engineering tests according to established procedures.
Build, modify, and install fixtures to properly support test samples.
Set up and configure test stands with required equipment and instrumentation.
Take detailed measurements and maintain accurate documentation.
Label samples and photograph abnormalities.
Observe and document flaws or issues before, during, and after testing.
Communicate effectively with engineers and test requestors regarding test status and findings.
Support vibration testing (experience with electro-dynamic shakers preferred).
Learn and operate custom-built test equipment.
Apply general knowledge of industrial machinery and passenger vehicle systems as needed.
Perform MIG and TIG welding.
Utilize machining equipment including mills, lathes, drill presses, and band saws.
Fabricate structures using 80/20 aluminum framing systems.
Read, interpret, and modify engineering drawings and prints.
Use CAD software to design, modify, or update fixtures.
Lay out complex machining coordinates.
Make quick modifications to fixtures as required.
Assist engineers with test sample mockups and repairs.
Maintain material inventory and order supplies as needed.
Perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
Troubleshoot and repair equipment when possible.
Fabricate replacement parts when feasible.
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional lab environment.
Manage scrapped materials and maintain supply organization.
RequirementsAssociate degree in Engineering Technology, Skilled Trades, or related field preferred; equivalent hands‑on experience considered.
3+ years of fabrication, machining, or mechanical testing experience preferred.
Experience in an automotive or industrial manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
Ability to support overtime as needed.
Basic computer skills.
Working ConditionsAbility to lift up to 50 pounds.
Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and use of hand and power tools.
Exposure to industrial lab environment including noise and varying temperatures.
