Open Book – Lead Reader Position
Open Book is looking for a Lead Reader to support its creative writing programme in Inverurie, running monthly sessions for the local community at the Inverurie Community Campus.

Location: Inverurie, Inverurie Community Campus
Overview: Open Book has been delivering shared reading and creative writing sessions for adults since March 2013. In the year running from April 2025 to March 2026 we delivered over 1,000 sessions across about 75 locations—from Shetland to Stranraer, Aberdeen, Inverness, Dundee, and the Central Belt—in libraries, health care settings, with the elderly, refugees, migrants, community groups, and in prisons.
Role Overview: The successful applicant will:
- be a published author with a publication record commensurate with authors in the Scottish Book Trust’s Author Database;
- have previous experience of workshop delivery;
- be asked to join the PVG Scheme and provide two references;
- be available to attend an online, paid training session in February/March and deliver 10 monthly workshops from April 2026 onward.
Contract and Fee: The contract covers 10 × 2‑hour shared reading + creative writing workshops in Inverurie over 12 months. Fee per workshop (incl. preparation, delivery, post‑session feedback) is £220. Up to 8 training hours—including compulsory training in the Open Book delivery model—will be funded at £30 per hour. No travel costs are provided.
Lead Readers are also asked to support their groups to attend a literary event during the project year, either online or in‑person, and may receive up to £120 per event for organising and attending.
