As an Engineering Apprentice with Network Rail, you’ll be at the heart of Scotland’s Railway, working on national projects, embracing the latest tech and gaining hands on experience that will take your career full steam ahead.
This opportunity is open to people from all walks of life. Whether you’re fresh out of school, switching careers, or looking for a hands‑on, rewarding role, we welcome your unique perspective and experiences.
Working alongside experienced engineers at one of our depots, you’ll help maintain our thousands of bridges, signals and hundreds of our level crossings, ensuring Scotland’s Railway keeps moving.
The scheme lasts for three years. You’ll kick off year one with our training provider, before moving into a placement at a Network Rail depot for years two and three. Get ready to embrace all weather conditions because we’re out there around the clock, come rain or shine but don’t worry, we’ll provide all the gear you need to stay safe, warm and comfortable.
These apprenticeships will be delivered in conjunction with UHI Inverness on a block release basis, with successful candidates starting their careers in August 2026.
What you’ll learnBy the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll earn your SCQF Level 7 in Engineering – Asset Lifecycle and Maintenance.
What qualifications or qualities are required?To apply, you’ll need a minimum of National 5s (or above) in English, a Science, and Maths (excluding Applications of Maths) at Grades A-C, along with one other subject at Grades A-C or equivalent. And don’t forget—you need to be aged 18 or over on or before September 2026 to come onboard the scheme.
It gets better! If you’ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship or a relevant engineering qualification, you’ll be ahead of the game. We’ll need you to provide evidence of your qualifications and demonstrate the skills you’ve gained through your studies.
