Purpose: To develop in each student an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each student to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of students in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student's ability.
Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
- Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing a course of study adopted by the Board that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
- Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
- Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent possible.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education environment.
- Evaluates each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
- Selects and requisitions uniforms, equipment, and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Cooperates with school administration in providing specialty performing groups for occasions such as Gavin Involvement Group meetings, assemblies, and interscholastic athletic events.
- Attends staff meetings as required.
- When applicable, for those approved in Adaptive Physical
Education: - Provide a thorough assessment of physical education needs, including current motor skill and fitness levels for students served in the program.
- Write goals and objectives for IEPs
- Plan, implement, and evaluate lessons and activities for students in the program.
- Assess student progress towards objectives and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to student(s), parents and administration.
- Supervise para-educators who work with students in the adaptive physical education classes.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by an administrator.
