Aboutthe Unit
We are the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Riley Children’s Health, a 23‑bed unit located within The Heart Center on the 3rd floor of the Simon Family Tower. We care for all post‑operative cardiac surgical patients as well as critically ill children with complex cardiac disease needing medical ICU management. We also care for newborns directly from birth who have a known cardiac defect or cardiac medical issue.
The CVICU strives for a culture of learning and compassion. Our team consists of the CVICU nurses, CVICU Intensivist, unit techs, NPs, PAs, cardiologists, pharmacists and all members who touch the same patients within the Riley Heart Center.
Our patient population ranges from newborns to adults. Nursing staff develops and maintains extensive clinical skills, caring for patients requiring advanced respiratory support, continuous dialysis, continuous inotropic medications, heart transplantation, and mechanical cardiac assist devices such as ECMO and VAD.
Nursing Skills Gained on this Unit- Caring for complex patients with multiple central access, intracardiac lines, ventilators, multiple medications and drains.
- Learn to cardiovert, defibrillate and administer medication to stabilise heart rhythms.
- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
- Caring for multiple VADs (Ventricular Assist Devices).
- Learn Dialysis (Prisma and Aquadex).

Full‑time nights or rotating day (6 weeks days/6 weeks nights).
Qualifications- Associates of Nursing (ASN) required;
Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred. - Active Registered Nurse (RN) licence in Indiana or active NLC RN licence.
- RN must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing programme.
- Basic Life Support certification through the AHA required.
- Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
