Position Summary

The Survivor Services Advocate is responsible for providing crisis intervention, advocacy, and services to meet the immediate needs of victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence who reside in our emergency shelter. In addition, this position facilitates and participates in community education and outreach efforts. The Advocate also coordinates with local law enforcement, Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO), Centers of Hope, and other community partners on various community and policing initiatives related to serving survivors and systems advocacy.

This is a grant funded position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assists survivors with immediate needs pertaining to safety, well-being, and basic necessities
  • Identifies and provides appropriate referrals for survivors
  • Writes and files protective order petitions on behalf of survivors
  • Manages internal and external referrals from The Julian Center crisis line, local and law enforcement, and other community partners
  • Assists with facilitation of and attends community outreach and education events, community meetings and trainings, as requested
  • Participates in supervision, team meetings, all-staff meetings, in-service trainings, and staff development projects
  • Works with the Survivor Advocacy Manager to maintain and enhance the agency’s relationship with law enforcement and community allies, as well as the services provided to clients
  • Maintains grant compliance through data entry and report preparation
  • Provides back up support to our 24/7 crisis desk and be on-call for advocacy services, as needed

Skills Needed

  • Trauma informed care, client focuses, rules reduction knowledge
  • Computer skills should include working knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Abilities in developing interpersonal relationships, communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to multi-task and be adaptable in an ever-changing environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Desire to work with clients using a strength-based, empowerment approach
  • Understanding, experience, and sensitivity in working with survivors who have experienced trauma, homelessness, and the related psychosocial issues
  • Knowledge of Indiana social services, benefits, and programs
  • Commitment to non-violent and cooperative work environment
  • Experience with outcome-based program evaluation
  • Ability to pass an enhanced criminal background check

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred. However, an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience may be substituted
  • 1-3 years of experience in direct service in a social service profession working with traumatized populations
  • Field practicums and internships may be considered for experience
  • Experience in writing case notes in the SOAP or DAP format.
