Job Description
The Fire Protection System Technician is responsible for analyzing, testing, repairing, and maintaining all campus-wide fire alarm systems and associated devices within university buildings and residence halls. This role ensures all systems operate safely, reliably, and in full compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, local fire codes, and University-adopted testing protocols.
Working with minimal supervision, the technician plays a critical role in campus life safety, emergency response, and construction support activities.
Key Responsibilities- Independently troubleshoot, analyze, test, repair, and maintain fire alarm systems and related devices across campus.
- Diagnose system malfunctions and implement corrective actions to ensure continuous operation.
- Perform inspections, repairs, and testing in strict accordance with NFPA guidelines, local fire codes, and University testing schedules.
- Maintain documentation to demonstrate compliance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
- Support construction and renovation projects by safely disabling and re‑enabling fire alarm device circuits and panel functions as required.
- Coordinate with project teams to maintain fire protection integrity during building modifications.
- Serve as a member of the emergency response team during working hours.
- Staff the fire alarm control panel during active alarm events and assist with system assessment and response coordination.
- Interface with contracted service vendors to diagnose and resolve complex fire alarm panel and field device issues.
- Provide technical insight and oversight to ensure quality and compliant repairs.
- Work from verbal and written instructions to troubleshoot fire alarm and fire network issues.
- Resolve both hardware and communication‑related system problems.
- Day shift position with hours determined by the Fire Department Chief and designated supervisor.
- Required to support campus events, including football game days and other major University events.
- Participate in on‑call rotation.
- Available for required overtime, including after‑hours repairs and emergency response.
- Capable of resolving issues both remotely and in person.
- Required to carry a University‑issued campus cell phone to support daily operations and emergency response needs.
- Associate’s degree or up to three (3) years of college or technical school coursework.
- Degree focus in Fire Protection System Installation, Repair, and Maintenance or a closely related field preferred.
- Seven (7) or more years of hands‑on experience in fire protection system installation, repair, and maintenance.
- In‑depth knowledge of fire protection and fire alarm systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Demonstrated experience with fire alarm control panels and signaling networks.
- Detailed working knowledge of the University’s fire alarm control and signaling networks preferred.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex system and network issues independently.
- Ability to remain professional, compassionate, and patient when interacting with individuals during emergency incidents.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Firefighter and/or EMT certification preferred.
- Willingness to obtain required certifications upon request.
Salary: $51,000/year Commensurate with Experience
