Position OverviewReporting to the Fiber Construction (Operations) Manager or Project Manager, the Fiber Optic Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic networks to ensure high-quality connectivity for customers. This role is primarily field-based and customer-facing.
Most service work involves troubleshooting and replacing drops. Any work beyond the NID (Network Interface Device) will be escalated to a construction crew.
Key Responsibilities- Install, splice, and test fiber optic cables in indoor, outdoor, underground, and aerial environments
- Perform OTDR testing, fusion splicing, power meter testing, and signal validation
- Troubleshoot fiber drops and service-related connectivity issues
- Work with fiber counts larger than 4-count fiber
- Replace drops and restore service as needed
- Maintain accurate documentation of installs, repairs, and test results
- Educate customers on equipment and provide basic troubleshooting guidance
- Follow OSHA, industry standards, and company safety policies
- Participate in rotating after-hours on-call schedule
- 2–5 years of hands‑on fiber optic or telecommunications experience
- Proficiency with OTDRs, fusion splicers, and power meters
- Ability to read construction drawings and fiber documentation
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions
