Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbiology & Immunology

Overview

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Otago is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Phage-Host Interactions (Phi) Laboratory, directed by Peter Fineran. The laboratory is internationally recognised for its contributions to bacteriophage biology, phage resistance mechanisms, and phage-based biotechnology innovation.

The successful candidate will contribute to a Marsden Fund-supported project investigating bacterial immune systems that inhibit jumbo bacteriophages. The research integrates microbial genetics, molecular biology, and interdisciplinary collaboration with national and international partners.

• Design and execute experimental studies on bacterial defence systems.
• Conduct advanced laboratory investigations and data interpretation.
• Apply molecular genetics, biochemistry, microscopy, and bioinformatics methodologies.
• Collaborate with internal team members and external research partners.
• Maintain rigorous documentation and research integrity standards.

• PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related life science discipline.
• Proven experience in microbial genetics, molecular techniques, and computational analysis.
• High level of organisation, independence, and scientific rigor.
• Ability to function effectively in collaborative research environments.
