Job Summary

Under the leadership of the Finance and Systems Manager, the accountant is the finance processes leader ensuring accuracy and accessibility of financial data, effective analysis and recommendations, and reporting meeting regulatory compliance. Daily operations include cash management, invoicing, reconciliations, general ledger analysis, and supporting compliance with GAAP, regulations, and reporting requirements.

The accountant supports the annual budget processes, leading the whole team in financial data integrity across admissions, utilization, building operation, staffing, and capital plans. The role also oversees accounting clerks, payroll processes, vendor management, and final report generation to federal and state agencies.

The accountant engages with programs and departments to understand service models and maintain transparency and collaboration.

Essential Job Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Oversees and executes accounting and finance practices and processes aligned with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Maintains financial security and compliance by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls throughout the organization’s processes, policies, and practices.
  • Works with the finance and accounting team and across the organization to improve financial processes and reporting for more efficient workflows.
  • Monitors data integrity, accuracy, and transparency through ongoing metrics management and reporting.
  • Integrates agile methodologies and practices within the team and with program and department leaders.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to leaders and external auditors.
  • Protects operations by maintaining confidentiality, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and third‑party payer regulations, and filing required financial reports.
  • Supports the Director/Controller in preparing an annual budget, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions.
  • Recruits, selects, trains, coaches, and disciplines direct‑report staff.
  • Participates in staff development and assessments, rotating through programs to learn service models.
  • Updates job knowledge by engaging in professional development opportunities.
  • Serves onsite, ensuring efficient finance department operations and handling other office duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge / Skills / Licensure / Certification
  • Sound knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and regulations.
  • Systematic approach to problem solving for all types of issues.
  • Detail oriented, organized, sets priorities, and meets deadlines.
  • Strong data management and data analysis skills with demonstrated experience.
  • Strong understanding of accounting, finance, and management principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations; poise, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Effective, clear, and persuasive oral and written communication skills with individuals and groups.
  • Employee will promote and adhere to the Compliance Plan as defined by Ability KC.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field required.
Experience
  • Minimum of three years of healthcare accounting experience, preferably in inpatient, community, specialty, or payer environments, with business analysis skills.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in financial systems management, especially with ERP systems.
  • Two or more years of work experience as finance or accounting leader, fostering independently within a matrix team model.
