Role Overview

The Senior Communications Consultant for the Media/Communications Division of the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC), assigned to IDOC's Central Office is responsible for internal and external communication efforts to foster an improved understanding of the department and increase public awareness and support of the IDOC’s philosophy, practices, and initiatives. This position is responsible content development across platforms to expand the IDOC’s outreach capabilities and interaction with the public.

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day In The Life
  • Serve as primary content developer for all internal and external communications for the department and direct interface with legislators, criminal justice stakeholders and outside agencies (e.g., blogs, infographics, templates, reports, social media posts, newsletters, agency memos, staff announcements, web copy).
  • Advise the chief communications officer concerning all issues which affect the department, facilities, and staff and collaborate closely with executives and division directors on projects to communicate agency objectives and initiatives.
  • Attend executive leadership meetings in support of the communications division and to advise the commissioner and executive team of upcoming needs, projects, or concerns.
  • Organize incoming media inquiries, providing confirmation of receipt responses and ensuring the chief communications officer is kept up to date on approaching deadlines, content needs, or areas of concern.
  • Serve as primary project manager of marketing and communications efforts to ensure consistency in messaging and the overall IDOC Brand.
  • Write, design, copy-edit, and publish IDOC content in order to generate support and elevate public awareness of programs and initiatives.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with executives and division directors to develop proactive story ideas and keep staff informed of events affecting their departments.
  • Oversee creation of an archive of photo and video assets in coordination with the photographers/videographers.
  • Respond to requests from television and film production companies concerning filming in IDOC facilities, including negotiating contractual agreements, location fees, managing the film project, resolving substantive issues that arise, reviewing rough cut footage and suggesting editorial changes.
  • Prepare materials for the purpose of promoting the IDOC and its initiatives, including branded annual reports, talking points, fact sheets, newsletters, feature articles, website content, etc.
  • Work with state agencies and vendors to develop marketing and communication plans and materials that are consistent with the IDOC Brand.
  • Provide counsel to the webmaster and content manager for the IDOC website and staff portal, ensuring that it is updated, fresh, timely and reflective of current DOC programs, initiatives, events, and announcements.
  • Develop and oversee content on all DOC social media platforms, including serving as a regular point of contact for facility public information officers.
  • Collaborate with fiscal leaders to prepare the marketing communications plan and communications budget for each fiscal year, coordinating with facilities for requests/need for all paid media, sponsor ships, promotional items and publications.
