Environment: GMP Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing (API)

Role Overview

The Automation Technician supports batch‑driven API manufacturing operations by maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated process and utility systems in a regulated GMP environment. This role is critical to ensuring batch integrity, equipment reliability, and production uptime while adhering to strict safety, quality, and documentation standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and maintain automated batch process equipment supporting API manufacturing
  • Support PLC and/or DCS‑controlled systems (Delta

    V preferred) including I/O, alarms, interlocks, and phase logic
  • Diagnose instrumentation, electrical, and controls issues impacting live production and batch execution
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on process and utility equipment
  • Support batch execution issues related to sequencing, per missives, and control logic
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Automation teams to resolve production interruptions
  • Accurately document all work in CMMS (e.g., Maximo) and GMP documentation systems
  • Follow all SOPs, change control, deviation, and data integrity requirements
  • Maintain safety as the highest priority when working around hazardous materials and energized systems

Technical Skillset & Experience

Automation & Controls

  • Hands‑on experience with PLC and/or DCS systems (Delta

    V, Rockwell, Siemens)
  • Understanding of batch process automation and ISA‑88 concepts
  • Ability to troubleshoot control logic, alarms, and HMI/SCADA interfaces

Experience with:

  • Pressure, flow, temperature, and level instruments
  • Control valves, actuators, and VFDs
  • Motors, power supplies, and safety circuits
  • Proficient using multimeters, loop calibrators, and standard diagnostic tools

Process & Utilities

  • Familiarity with API process equipment and supporting utilities (pumps, vacuum systems, blowers, agitators)
  • Understanding how utilities interface with batch operations

GMP & Regulatory Requirements

  • Prior experience working in a GMP pharmaceutical or biopharma environment
  • Strong documentation discipline and understanding of change control and deviation impact
  • Knowledge of data integrity and regulated maintenance practices
  • Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED (technical certification or associate degree preferred)
  • 3+ years of experience as an Automation, Controls, or Multi‑Craft Maintenance Technician
  • Experience supporting highly automated manufacturing equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and teamwork skills
    - Work Environment
  • Manufacturing production floor and utility areas
  • Exposure to chemicals, powders, liquids, and gases
  • PPE required; safety‑critical role
  • Willingness to support off‑hours, emergencies, and scheduled shutdowns
