Overview

CANCER CENTER (IN-CANC-IUINA). The Indiana University (IU) Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is the central hub for cancer research and education across Indiana University. It is the state's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of 57 in the nation. The designation recognizes excellence in basic, clinical, and population research; educational activities; and community outreach across the state.

A key partner for the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is Indiana University, particularly the IU School of Medicine, the largest medical school in the United States with nine regional campuses. The Cancer Center is organized as a matrix center within IU, with linkages to the IU Health (IUH) healthcare system. The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks a dynamic individual to serve as the Associate Director for Administration.

Reporting to the center director, this role plans, directs, and executes administrative duties of the cancer center.

Responsibilities
  • Participates in the planning and evaluation activities of the External Advisory Board (EAB).
  • Oversees cancer center financial management, including the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) expenditures and all other research and education expenditures.
  • Provides oversight of the Clinical Trials Office (CTO), Clinical Research Committee (CRC), pilot project programs, and developmental funds, as well as Research Funding Announcements.
  • Oversees financial operations of the cancer center's shared resources, including chargeback rates.
  • Assists cancer center senior leadership with recruitment of new faculty, crafting start-up packages, and arranging space allocation.
  • Provides operations oversight of cancer center laboratory space including laboratory space reduction and expansion.
  • Provides oversight of information technology, publications/communications, and human resources.
  • Operationally coordinates clinical and research missions with IUH, working closely with the Associate Director for System Integration.
General Responsibilities
  • Directs the daily and long-term financial and/or administrative operations of multiple university units or an unusually large multi-faceted academic, research, and teaching department within a school or college.
  • Responsible for accuracy, timelines, and the general integrity of the Health Services Administration family, and fiscal, policy, and internal control management.
  • Creates annual revenue and expenditure budget for a large school/college. Develops budgetary policies and procedures.
  • Develops models and provides recommendations to executive leadership for resource allocations and to enhance financial performance.
  • Develops and introduces growth strategies and identifies risks.
  • Monitors division and campus budgets and reports any significant deviations from approved budgets.
  • Controls all expenditures and statements of accounts to ensure regulatory compliance and fiscal integrity.
  • Directs the management of general appropriation, endowment, federal and non-federal grants and contracts, and gift funds.
  • Develops, plans, and directs special projects, which may include space renovations, space allocations, staffing, equipment purchases, long-range plans, leasing of off-campus space and services.
  • Provides leadership and direction through other managers.
  • May oversee and direct a variety of human resources activities including employment, labor relations, benefits, training, and classification for unit(s)/campus.

Education
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in health services, finance, business, or related field.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree in health services, business administration, a science-related field, or a related field.
Work Experience
  • Required: 5 years of related functional experience; 3 years of management experience in related field.
  • Preferred: 10 years of related experience in an academic research setting; leadership experience within an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, including leadership in CCSG activities.
