Brief Description

The FGD Operations Shift Supervisor provides on‑shift leadership for the safe, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems and associated plant equipment. This role directs Operations personnel, coordinates closely with Maintenance and System Control, and ensures plant performance meets load, safety, and regulatory requirements.

During assigned shifts, the Supervisor assumes full responsibility for station operations in the absence of plant management and serves as the primary decision‑maker for operational continuity, workforce direction, and compliance adherence.

Merom Generating Station is a 2‑Unit, 1080‑MW rated coal‑fired power plant.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Operations & Environmental Performance
  • Direct the safe, continuous, and efficient operation of FGD systems and plant equipment during assigned shifts.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, including SO2, NOx, and opacity standards.
  • Maintain real‑time communication with System Control regarding system availability, operating conditions, and load requirements.
  • Lead operational response during load curtailments, abnormal conditions, and emergency events to minimize impact and duration.
  • Monitor plant performance and prioritize operational actions to maintain reliability and customer commitments.
Leadership & Workforce Management
  • Supervise and provide leadership to:
    Control Operators, Auxiliary Operators, FGD Operators, FGD Auxiliary Operators.
  • Assign, direct, and monitor daily work activities to ensure productivity, safety, and quality standards.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching sessions, and development reviews.
  • Ensure employees receive required technical, compliance, and safety training.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Facilitate weekly safety meetings and reinforce behavioral safety expectations.
Maintenance Coordination & Work Management
  • Identify operational and equipment issues and initiate maintenance work through the work request process.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance through Daily Work Scheduling and Long‑Range Planning meetings.
  • Verify maintenance work meets operational needs and quality expectations.
  • Coordinate cross‑craft activities to support plant priorities and outage readiness.
  • Expedite resource deployment during emergent or unplanned conditions.
Safety & Compliance
  • Administer and enforce plant safety programs, including Clearance Permit Systems, Confined Space Entry, and Hot Work (Cutting and Welding) permits.
  • Ensure all Operations personnel maintain proficiency in safety and procedural requirements.
  • Actively identify, mitigate, and report operational and personnel safety risks.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Serve as a key liaison between Operations, Maintenance, Environmental, and other plant departments.
  • Provide leadership alignment to support departmental and organizational strategic goals.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and timely communication regarding shift activities, incidents, and operational status.
Requirements
Education
  • Minimum:
    Associate degree (2‑year) in a related technical field.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s degree (4‑year) in a technical or engineering discipline.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience
  • Minimum: 5 years of relevant technical or power generation operations experience.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

  • Effective problem‑solving and sound decision‑making under pressure.

Working Conditions
  • Power generation facility environment.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, heights, and uneven terrain.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required.
