Overview of the Position:
The Judicial Conference of the United States has authorized the appointment of a full-time U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Indiana at Indianapolis, Indiana, effective Jan. 2, 2027.
The duties of the position are demanding and wide-ranging, involving both civil and criminal case responsibilities:
- Conduct most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases.
- Trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases.
- Conduct mediation and settlement proceedings in civil cases.
- Conduct various other pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation of the Judges of the District Court.
- Trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants. The basic authority of a U.S. Magistrate Judge is specified in 28 U.S.C. § 636.
