Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance;
monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
The Business Systems Consultant – Intermediate plays an important role in IDEM’s Business Relationship Management (BRM) program, which focuses on improving collaboration and service delivery between Information Services (IS) and the agency’s Program Areas. Acting as a liaison, the BSC Intermediate helps connect technology solutions with IDEM’s mission by fostering clear communication, building strong partnerships, and ensuring services meet both agency and IS needs.
In this position, the BSC Intermediate works closely with Program Area managers and IS teams to understand business requirements, identify opportunities for improvement, and translate those needs into actionable recommendations. The role requires solid analytical skills, a good understanding of IT concepts, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. The BSC Intermediate supports IDEM’s digital initiatives by assisting with planning, process improvements, and ensuring technology solutions align with agency priorities.
This includes working through complex issues, balancing competing needs, and collaborating with IS leadership, Program Areas, and vendors to deliver practical, sustainable solutions.
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $61,022.00but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the LifeThe essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Assists in the development of technical standards and policies.
- Recommends and facilitates quality improvement efforts.
- May train, guide, and advise lower-level Business Analysts.
- Formulates and defines system scopes and objectives through research and fact‑finding combined with a basic understanding of user needs and business systems and industry best practices.
- Creates process change through the integration of new processes with existing ones and communication of changes to impacted Business Systems teams.
- Establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with assigned customers in order to help them meet their business and technical needs.
- Participates in the development of strategic plans based on customer needs.
- Analyzes business and user needs, document requirements, and devises new technical business system solutions or revises existing system logic difficulties as necessary.
- Develops or modifies moderately complex information or communication systems processes.
- Facilitates the delivery of technical business solutions and products.
- Manages the expectations of customers, peers, vendors, and management.
- Establishes contracts for the procurement of technical business solutions.
