Virtual Behavioral Health Crisis Assessment Counselor – MS Licensed
Location:
Indiana University Health (Remote/Virtual)
Schedule: 2:00 PM – 12:30 AM
(30 hours/week) – 3 ten-hour shifts, one weekend per month
The Virtual Behavioral Health Crisis Assessment Counselor provides comprehensive mental health assessments and crisis intervention services via telehealth. This role involves facilitating patient involvement in treatment, conducting assessments, and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure safe, timely, and effective care. The counselor acts as a key liaison with protective services and community agencies, supporting cases of abuse, neglect, domestic violence, discharge planning, and resource mobilization.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct face-to-face (via telehealth) mental health assessments upon physician referral.
- Facilitate individual, group, and family counseling sessions in a virtual setting.
- Perform utilization review and discharge planning to support safe patient transitions.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members to coordinate care and ensure patients and families receive necessary education and resources.
- Interpret and communicate complex patient and family psychosocial needs; model caring and professional practices.
- Assess psychosocial risk factors, including prior functioning, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping mechanisms.
- Counsel patients and families on emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness, disability, or trauma.
- Access and mobilize community and family resources to meet patient needs.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for cases involving child abuse/neglect, elder abuse, institutional abuse, and domestic violence.
- Act as liaison between Indiana University Health and local protective agencies (APS/CPS).
- Maintain principles and techniques of crisis intervention, de-escalation, and risk management.
- Provide intervention in guardianship, foster care, adoption, and mental health Level II placements.
- Deliver evidence-based practices such as CBT, MI, and DBT.
- Support individuals in dangerous or potentially dangerous situations with clinical leadership.
- Ensure a safe, therapeutic, and supportive environment through instruction and intervention.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, and other stakeholders.
- Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related mental health field from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: 3-5 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience.
- L icensure: Current Indiana license in one of the following: LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAC, or HSPP.
- Certifications: Crisis intervention certification required within 90 days of hire. BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
- Knowledge &
Skills:
Proficiency in psychosocial assessment, therapeutic counseling, and crisis intervention. - Experience with evidence-based practices such as CBT, MI, and DBT.
- Knowledge of state and county protective legal mandates.
- Understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
- Ability to create a safe, therapeutic environment and instruct on daily activities.
- Basic proficiency in Electronic Medical Records and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with patients, families, and community agencies.
- Position is remote with scheduled hours from 2:00 PM to 12:30 AM.
- May include on-call and holiday rotations as needed.
- Serving patients across Indiana via telehealth.
