Job SummaryThe Health Information Specialist works collaboratively within the clinical care environment to support health information management (HIM) functions across the organization. This role is responsible for maintaining, processing, and protecting confidential patient information in electronic and paper formats while ensuring compliance with HIPAA, organizational policies, and industry standards.
Responsibilities- Medical Records & Documentation:
Maintain medical records in accordance with legal, regulatory, and industry standards. - Scan, index, and upload external and internal records into the electronic health record (EHR).
- Ensure all medical documentation is accurately filed and accessible for patient care and compliance.
- Privacy, Security & Compliance:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HIPAA and privacy regulations. - Verify the legitimacy and authorization of all release-of-information requests.
- Process, track, and invoice record requests as required.
- Report any suspected or actual breaches of protected health information to Compliance and Risk Management.
- Release of Information & Requests:
Manage all requests for medical records from patients, providers, legal entities, and affiliates. - Retrieve, prioritize, and process requests accurately and within required timelines.
- Assist patients, staff, and external partners with medical record questions and requests.
- Referral & Workflow Support:
Support oversight of the internal referral system. - Assist with improving HIM workflows and system efficiency.
- Provide guidance to staff on record management and documentation standards.
- Training &
Education:
Assist in developing and delivering staff education related to health information management, documentation standards, and privacy requirements. - Additional Responsibilities:
Perform other duties as assigned to support HIM operations and organizational compliance.
Skills and Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in Health Informatics, Computer Science, or a healthcare-related field preferred.
- At least one (1) year of experience in a healthcare environment strongly preferred.
- EPIC experience preferred.
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
