Behavioral Health Counselor - MS (PRN)
Location: Gateway Plaza, Indiana University Health
Shift: PRN (Flexible, As Needed)

Indiana University Health is seeking a compassionate and experienced Master's Degree Counselor to provide vital mental health services through a flexible, PRN schedule at Gateway Plaza. This role is integral to delivering comprehensive mental health assessments, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and protective services coordination.
Position Overview:The Behavioral Health Counselor will:
- Facilitate patient involvement in treatment and educational activities
- Conduct individual, group, and family counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based practices (T, MI, DBT)
- Perform utilization reviews and assist with complex discharge planning to ensure safe, timely patient care transitions
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate services and support
- Assess psychosocial risk factors, including prior functioning, support systems, and coping mechanisms
- Provide emotional, social, and financial counseling to patients and families
- Access and mobilize community and family resources to meet identified needs
- Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral
- Support crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts in high-stress or potentially dangerous situations
- Serve as a liaison for child abuse/neglect, domestic violence, and protective services teams
- Intervene in guardianship, foster care, adoption, and placement processes as needed
- Education: Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field from an accredited institution
- Experience: 3-5 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred
- Licensure: Current Indiana license in one of the following:
LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAC, or HSPP - Certifications:
- Crisis intervention certification required within 90 days of hire
- BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Proven experience in healthcare, mental health, or community settings
- Knowledge of disease impact and human behavioral responses
- Familiarity with evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT)
- Understanding of legal mandates related to child and adult protective services
- Strong grasp of growth, development, and end-of-life principles
- Ability to create and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment
- Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and MS Office applications
- Excellent relationship-building skills with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, and healthcare providers
- Effective communication and active listening
- Crisis management and de-escalation techniques
- Collaboration within multidisciplinary teams
- Maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
- Compassionate, culturally sensitive approach to care
