The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in conjunction with IU Health Medical Group (IUHMG), are expanding the Division of Clinical Chemistry and are jointly recruiting an academic chemical pathologist/clinical chemist.
The individual selected will be based at the central IU Health Pathology Laboratory (IUHPL) in Indianapolis, which houses an automated clinical chemistry core laboratory providing testing for general chemistry and special chemistry including toxicology. The IUHPL Division of Clinical Chemistry provides services to the 16-hospital Indiana University Health system as well as multiple outreach clients, Eskenazi Health, and the Richard L.
Roudebush VA Medical Center. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative group of 2 clinical chemists and 2 chemical pathologists. Leadership opportunities are available depending on the interest and expertise of the candidate. This position is expected to have a major impact in a clinical chemistry laboratory within a large laboratory system looking to expand its clinical chemistry and toxicology operations.
Qualifications and level of experience determine the academic rank.
- Provide technical leadership, training, quality assurance/quality control, and regulatory testing guidance.
- Deliver professional diagnostic services in clinical chemistry including electrophoresis (serum/urine/CSF protein; hemoglobin).
- Participate in mass spectrometry services for the Indiana University Health Pathology Laboratory.
- Provide leadership in laboratory test development and laboratory administration.
- Provide clinical and technical consultation and conference support with department faculty members.
- Commitment to clinical and/or translational research.
- Actively participate in educational activities with medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students.
- Is proficient with protein and hemoglobin electrophoresis interpretation.
- Has experience with laboratory test development and validation, including FDA approved and laboratory developed tests.
- Is academically oriented and has interest in collaborative research and scholarship in clinical chemistry.
- Thorough knowledge of principles and techniques utilized in chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and related sciences applicable to clinical chemistry and toxicology laboratory procedures and test method development.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both speaking and writing with laboratory personnel, medical directors, and clinicians.
- Ability to supervise, provide guidance, training, and technical expertise to laboratory personnel.
- Knowledge of new equipment, techniques, and testing procedures used within the clinical chemistry and toxicology fields.
- Knowledge of newly developed and marketed medications/illicit substances to assist with interpreting toxicology results.
MD, PhD, or both in clinical pathology, chemical pathology, clinical chemistry, clinical toxicology or a related field, preferably with American Board of Pathology (MD) or American Board of Clinical Chemistry (PhD, MD) board certification or board eligibility.
