Overview
Job Purpose:
The basic function of a Home Care Aide is to perform tasks that enable clients remain in their own homes and out of long-term care facilities for as long as possible. Help patients to complete activities of daily living that are difficult for them because of a physical or mental disability. Provide assistance with intermittent household task necessary to the maintenance of a safe and habitable home environment.
The service is restricted to non-skilled tasks and the need for services is determined in relationships to the client’s functioning capacity. This role is suited for workers looking to be assigned clients or patients.

- Planning, preparation and clean-up of meals
- Making beds and changing linens with the participants in or out of bed as required
- Brushing, combing, and shampooing hair
- Giving bed baths or assist with shower or tub bath
- Assist with oral care such as brushing teeth or denture care when participant is unable
- Giving assistance to and from the bed to a wheelchair, walker or chair when a participant is weight bearing
- Assisting the participants with ordinarily self-administered medications (open bottles, get water)
- Tidying and dusting the home
- Cleaning kitchen counters, cupboards, and appliances, including oven, surface burners and fridge
- Laundering clothes and linens
- Making beds and changing sheets
- Sweeping and/or vacuuming, and mopping floors
- Bagging trash inside the home and putting it out for pick-up
- Shopping for essential items (e.g., groceries, cleaning supplies, etc.)
- Advance Personal Care — Assist with ostomy care, catheter care, perform bowel programs, administer non-injectable meds, assist with insulin set-up and perform vital signs and weights
Home Care aide must be 18 years of age. A minimum of one year experience of direct patient care with either a Skilled Nursing facility or an In-Home Care Agency is preferred. Home Care Aide must be physically able to lift a minimum of 75 lbs. and be able to move a patient without any assistance. Home Care Aide must also be able to help assist the patient with walking through use of a cane, walker or gait belt throughout the facility or client’s home.
