Job Summary

This is a senior level actuarial analyst position. The role is part of Highmark’s Actuarial Executive Development Program and requires progress toward a valid actuarial credential. The analyst will define, diagnose, and analyze problems, outline data requirements, devise solutions, and mentor less experienced staff. Responsibilities include leading actuarial studies, analysis, and presentation materials to inform decision makers and recommend actions to management.

Processes improvement, applying actuarial techniques and statistical analysis in areas such as premium and pricing development, claim trend analysis, medical economics, profitability analysis, wellness studies, predictive modeling, provider contracting, and reserving are key functions.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Define & diagnose problems; outline data requirements and devise solutions; review results using industry knowledge and consider alternative explanations.
  • Create studies, analysis, and presentation materials to inform decision makers; provide recommendations across the actuarial department.
  • Ensure internal and external consistency of all work; perform reasonability checks and exceed customer expectations; validate suspect results.
  • Use knowledge forums to gain industry perspective; demonstrate subject‑matter expertise; seek feedback for development.
  • Understand position goals and objectives; envision and implement process improvements that align with corporate goals; shift between big‑picture and detailed thinking.
  • Manage own time and resources across multiple projects; prioritize tasks independently; remain flexible in a dynamic environment.
  • Interact with stakeholders to foster cooperation; explain technical work to both technical and non‑technical audiences; provide decision support.
  • Guide and mentor less experienced staff; accept feedback; lead by example.
  • Other duties as assigned or requested.
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline.
Preferred Education
  • Master’s Degree or its equivalent in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline.
Required Experience
  • 3 years of experience in an actuarial role.
  • Successfully passed 6 actuarial exam components.
Preferred Experience
  • 10 or more actuarial exam components.
Licenses & Certifications
  • None required.
Skills
  • In‑depth knowledge and application of actuarial principles and practices across multiple fields.
  • Complex assignment expertise and the ability to visualize, articulate, and solve complex problems.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
