Job Summary:
The Deputy Chief Financial Officer supports the CFO in overseeing the organization’s financial strategy, operations, and governance. This role ensures strong financial management, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. The Deputy CFO acts as the CFO’s delegate when required and plays a key role in driving financial performance and long-term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:Strategic & Leadership
- Support the CFO in developing and executing financial strategy aligned with organizational goals
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to executive leadership and the board
- Act as CFO in their absence, representing the finance function at senior forums
- Lead and mentor senior finance staff, promoting high-performance culture
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting (monthly, quarterly, annual)
- Monitor cash flow, working capital, and liquidity management
- Review of financial statements and management reports for accuracy and insight
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and statutory requirements
- Oversee internal controls, risk management frameworks, and audit processes
- Coordinate with external auditors, regulators, and financial institutions
- Support corporate governance and board reporting requirements
- Improve financial systems, processes, and controls for efficiency and scalability
- Oversee treasury, tax, payroll, and financial operations (as applicable)
- Partner with business units to support operational and commercial decision-making
- Evaluate investments, capital expenditures, and business cases
- Liaise with banks, investors, auditors, and external advisors
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across departments
- Strategic thinking and strong analytical ability
- Proven leadership and people management skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- High integrity, sound judgment, and attention to detail
- Ability to manage complex financial operations and tight deadlines
- Strong working knowledge of K-12 educational funding environment
- Charter school experience strongly preferred
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting (master’s preferred)
- Professional qualification (CPA, or equivalent)
- Typically, 10–15+ years of progressive finance/accounting leadership experience
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards and regulatory requirements
- Experience working with senior leadership and boards
- Experience with K-12 educational organizations
- Strong mastery of accrual accounting and governmental accounting
