Role Overview

This position directly contributes to maintaining and constructing interstate highways, U.S. routes, and state roads in Indiana (INDOT's primary functions and core operations). This position directly impacts INDOT’s strategic mission to “collaboratively plan, build, and maintain safe and innovative transportation infrastructure”, by preparing contracts for roadway projects. This position is responsible for safely completing fieldwork, project design, quantity calculations, permit preparation, special provisions, and cost estimates.

The position will work collaboratively with multiple divisions, including but not limited to Bridge and Highway Engineering, Technical Services, Environmental Services, Capital Program Management, Legal, Contract Administration, and Construction. The position will play an integral role in developing and reviewing contracts for the Highway Engineering Division. The Highway Engineering Division is tasked with developing in‑house projects as well as providing technical expertise regarding routine and novel design situations.

The department is organized into two teams, in order to provide specialized support to each of the District partners. The teams are building relationships within each district to increase rapport, sharing of best practices and technical knowledge between all groups.

Engineer Trainee

A professional engineering license is not required for this position. Candidates who have an engineering degree but do not hold a professional license are eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones, including passing the EIT exam, years of experience, and obtaining their professional engineering license. Once a candidate or incumbent has passed the EIT exam the salary traditionally starts at an annual salary of $67,314 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Indianapolis.

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $75,010.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

A Day In The Life

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Planning & Project Management:
    Serve as a resource for proposal development and research process. Ensure milestones, deliverables, and implementation strategies, are established accurately. Assist supervisor in the development of strategic planning and resource utilization. You will participate in providing project reviews in accordance with the Agency’s established performance standards. Ensure that all plans reflect the scope of services, existing field conditions, appropriate design standards, and sound engineering judgment.
  • Program Management:
    Coordinate programs and plans for the division/department; interpret laws, regulations, and guidelines within area of assignment; review program plans for completeness, economic and technical feasibility.
