Job Overview

Planning Engineer develops long‑term maintenance and investment (Capital) project plans and provides technical support for thermal and renewable generation sites in the U.S. The role is responsible for labor and material specification development, budget development, material procurement, and bid review of assigned projects. The Project Engineer is primarily responsible for these tasks, and also assists in diagnosing mechanical and electrical equipment issues, providing technical direction to contracted and plant personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Perform inspections on mechanical/electrical generation equipment during outages or downtime to support facility operations and project planning.
  • Create, scope, and justify projects, develop cost estimates, and budget future work plans for maintenance, upgrades, and replacement of assets.
  • Maintain current programs that aid the plant’s operations and maintenance division.
  • Prepare estimates, construction drawings, material specifications and lists, procurement forms, work orders, contracts, and property record reports.
  • Utilize Management of Change to control modifications to equipment, systems, and processes.
  • Instruct and train less experienced personnel on the technical aspects of their jobs.
  • Act as a representative of the Company; ensure personal and contractor safety.
  • Accept short‑term assignments at other AES facilities.
  • Ensure safety performance by meeting or exceeding AES safety policy requirements.
  • Control project costs through economic evaluations and maintain costs within approved estimates.
  • Engage Supply Chain in procurement activities by providing bid specifications in accordance with procurement policy.
  • Provide generating station operations & maintenance support, responding to requests timely and participating in technical working groups.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor‘s Degree or equivalent level of experience.
  • Experience in thermal and renewable electric utility and power generation.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Suite; SAP and GE APM experience helpful.
  • Background in Reliability Centered Maintenance practices.
  • Maintenance and Reliability Professional Certification (CMRP) desirable.
  • Project management experience with ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills for making presentations.
  • Capability to work effectively and cooperatively with others with minimum supervision.
