HERRON SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN (IN-HERR-IUINA)

Herron School of Art and Design (Herron) has been Indiana's premier school for art and design since its founding in 1902, now offering regionally and nationally accredited professional degrees in art, design, and music. The school is part of the thriving urban campus of Indiana University (IU) Indianapolis, located near the heart of the city and its many cultural institutions.

Herron has 50 full‑time faculty members serving 12 undergraduate majors and 6 graduate degrees, offering a curriculum that prepares graduates to be leaders in a world that requires a unique combination of creativity, conceptual skills, and technical abilities. Herron is an engaged community and regional partner with 5 public galleries, youth and continuing education programs, and the Basile Center for Art, Design, and Public Life.

Department‑Specific

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate annual giving activities.
    • Prepare, distribute, and file letters of acknowledgement to donors.
    • Enter donor data into database and run reports as needed.
    • Make stewardship calls to donors who make annual gifts to the school, to help build the donor pipeline.
    • Assist with stewardship packets to scholarship donors.
    • Work with Director of Development on annual projects such as online giving, IU Day, Regatta, Calendar Year‑End, Friends of Herron, and John Herron Society appeals, etc.
    • Work with Marketing and Communications on projects such as giving sites and updates on the website, public donor listing posters, social media, e‑newsletter features, etc.
    • Proofread proposals, letters, and other correspondence prior to distribution.
  • Coordinate alumni engagement activities.
    • Serve as chairperson of the school's existing Alumni Engagement Committee made up of staff, faculty and alumni.
    • Oversee the nomination process for the annual Herron Distinguished Alumni Award.
    • Attend Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA) quarterly meetings, trainings, and workshops.
    • Enter alumni data into database and run reports as needed.
    • Provide tours of the school to alumni.
    • Work with Herron's Career Development Director regarding connecting with alumni who are seeking internships, mentoring opportunities and other engagement with students.
    • Serve as contact person to the Herron Alumni Drawing Class.
    • Oversee annual IUAA budget reports and proposal submissions.
  • Assist with development and alumni events.
    • Work with Director of Development regarding planning, implementation and evaluation of donor and alumni focused events such as gallery preview receptions, alumni reunions/rendezvous (in and outside of Indianapolis), faculty research showcases, etc.
    • Oversee all aspects of Herron's 125th anniversary taking place in 2027, including overall plans and theme, volunteer recruitment and management, work with vendors, and with Director of Development regarding underwriting of the event.
General Responsibilities
  • Perform administrative tasks in support of the university's development and advancement efforts and may interact with officers across all development and advancement job families, as well as donors, the general public, and representatives across the university and university community.
  • Tasks may include answering phone calls and emails, maintaining and updating donor databases, scheduling events and travel for donor interaction and solicitation, preparing and sending digital and direct mail solicitations, preparing documentation of pledged and received gifts, and coordinating stewardship and donor recognition activities.
  • Compile metrics, facts, and general operations information about IU and its schools and departments for distribution to donors.
  • Prepare and update basic and complex reports and presentations for use by other development staff, engaging supervisor for help as needed.
  • Provide an excellent donor experience through customer service, active listening, inclusive language, and thoughtful and persuasive discussion, consistently upholding the integrity and mission of Indiana University.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
