The University of Notre Dame School of Architecture

Restoring reason, beauty, and trust in Architecture

Over the last thirty years, our school has developed a pedagogy that seeks cultural continuity, community, and harmony with nature through mindful design. It is a vital point of departure for addressing the urban and environmental changes that all societies currently face.

We consider our pedagogy's goals, content, and methodological rigor, as well as its commitment to both substance and change, as part of a legitimate campaign to restore architecture to its millennial role: generating the most diverse possible human habitat with reason, beauty, intelligence, justice, and peace of mind. An electronic version of our book, An Architectural Pedagogy for the Twenty-First Century can be accessed here: https://nds

The School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame is a Catholic academic community of higher learning, dedicated to the pursuit and sharing of truth for its own sake. One of our distinctive goals is to provide a forum where, through free inquiry and open discussion, the various lines of Catholic thought may intersect with all the forms of knowledge found in the arts, sciences, professions, and every other area of human scholarship and creativity.

Position

Description

The School of Architecture is seeking applications and nominations for the following faculty position:
Architectural Design and Theory Faculty Tenure-track or Tenured. The position will be available starting July 1, 2026.

The School will consider outstanding candidates to teach undergraduate and graduate architectural design studio courses. In addition to teaching design studios, candidates may have an opportunity to develop coursework in their secondary fields of expertise, especially those related to new traditional architecture and urbanism, architectural history, theory, and landscape architecture. Rank will be determined based upon experience.

Responsibilities
  • Teach a combination of undergraduate 4th year studio as well as graduate foundations and theory curriculum in both the fall and spring semesters.
  • Maintain an active scholarly research, practice, or creative work trajectory.
  • Participation in meetings, committees, reviews, presentations, and other service activities throughout the academic year, both within the School of Architecture and the University.
Qualifications

Required: Applicants must have an M.ARCH, M.ADU, or PhD by the time of appointment, a record of excellence in research or practice/creative work, as appropriate for the candidate's rank and a commitment to teaching excellence.

Preferred: Faculty with demonstrated capability or service to institutions like the ACSA, NAAB or AIA are encouraged to apply.

This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate.
