Principal and Superintendent SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Counseling and assisting students with Crisis situations and with educational, personal, social, occupational, placement, and related problems in planning and adjustment. Working with teachers in studying, diagnoses, and understanding students; planning, conducting group guidance activities; utilizing community resources; and participating in in-service teachers-education activities. Work with the administrative staff and other school personnel in planning, developing, and conducting the total guidance program, scheduling of classes, curriculum study, and research.
Working with community agencies, parents, and individuals in coordinating school and community resources and activities which contribute to the improvements of pupil personnel services. Assists with transportation supervision needs by monitoring students during loading and unloading times.
- Conduct registration of students.
- Conducts counseling interviews; teacher, principal, and parent referrals;
At Risk students, new students; failures; student requests; provide occupational and educational information; pertinent facts about jobs, college, graduation requirements, credits earned; discuss educational and vocational goals; interpreting test results and related scores to vocational and educational goals. A conference will be held with the teacher or principal when deemed appropriate by the counselor. - Recognizes behavior patterns that may be symptomatic of educational or emotional problems. Makes appropriate referrals, and contact parents or appropriate agencies.
- Consults with parents and school staff about areas affecting overall student performance.
- Acts as consultant for teachers and parents.
- Maintains liaison with community agencies, referral services, and hospital or home study programs.
- Provide preventative guidance activities for classrooms and student groups. Provide career seminars for interested students.
- Works closely with local private scholarship foundation and assists in the application and award of these scholarships.
- Assists with miscellaneous school related activities.
- Explores reasons for deviation of behavior in cases which have been referred to the principal for serious disciplinary action.
- Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
- Helps instill the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
- Maintains a confidential record and other appropriate records for students. (Under no circumstances is this file made available to other students.)
- Provides an orientation program for all students new to the building.
- Oversee an annual follow-up study of high school graduates.
- Conducts research projects as requested by the principal and/or the local superintendent, such as follow-up studies of former pupils, test results, and so forth.
- Conducts, supervises, and interprets the group testing program with the school staff.
- Maintains and builds an occupational information library, including a minimum number of college and technical school catalogues.
- Helps plan and hold in-service for staff members and administrators.
- Helps to plan and implement a student assistant program for grades 9-12.
- Relate to all students from all backgrounds in a warm, caring, positive manner.
- Encourage students to evaluate alternatives, formulate realistic goals and become increasingly self-directive.
- Maintain acceptable non-puntitive relationships with students and respect their confidences.
- Write recommendation for students applying for post-secondary education admissions or scholarships or job placement; assist in job placement.
- Assist students in completing applications and making necessary arrangements in meeting testing schedules.
- Orientation of students for the joint vocational school; consult in career education program.
- Provide materials pertaining to college admission test; administer college admission tests.
- Provide applications for post-secondary education admissions, scholarships, and financial aid grants; assist students in completion of forms; transcript preparation.
- College visitations tabulating surveys and scheduling students for conference with college representatives and various colleges and universities.
- Assists with orientation and open house nights for parents and students.
- Serves as advisor for extracurricular, service-oriented student groups.
- Implements and evaluates tutoring programs.
- Appropriate State of Indiana teaching certificate. Completed all requirements for a Guidance Counselor with a Masters.
- Demonstrates a sincere desire to aid all students.
