Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Children’s Hospital is seeking a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist to join a highly collaborative, team-based service providing inpatient consult-liaison psychiatric care to medically hospitalized children and adolescents. This role is ideal for a psychiatrist who enjoys complex, medically integrated cases, values academic engagement and team-based care, and seeks an intellectually rewarding position with manageable volume and strong institutional support.

A typical patient presentation includes psychiatric evaluation following suicide attempt or significant self-injury; psychiatric care requiring inpatient medical monitoring (IV meds, G-tubes, wound care); eating disorders requiring medical stabilization; functional neurological symptom disorder (FNSD) impacting safe discharge; trauma-related behavioral dysregulation or TBI-associated symptoms; chronic pain syndromes with functional impairment; medical nonadherence requiring inpatient intervention; and CNS-involved medical conditions contributing to psychiatric symptoms (e.g., autoimmune encephalitis).

Average patient volume is approximately 2–4 patients per day.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consult-liaison psychiatric care to medically hospitalized pediatric patients
  • Collaborate closely with hospitalists, subspecialists, nursing, social work, psychology, and case management
  • Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows as part of the IUSoM academic mission
  • Contribute to committees, program development, and improvement initiatives
  • Engage in scholarly activity as desired (research not required, but opportunities available)
Schedule & Call
  • Current schedule: M-F, approximately 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Future opportunity:
Potential transition to a 7-on / 7-off model that would include inpatient unit rounding on weekends
  • Call:
Low commitment (approximately 2 weekends every 6 months)
  • Nighttime and overflow coverage supported by a designated team, supporting predictable end-of-day departures
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • MD or DO (or foreign equivalent)
  • BC/BE in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Comfortable with in-person, bedside psychiatric care in medically complex patients
  • Interest in consult-liaison psychiatry and interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Willingness to teach / work with learners
Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: ~ $281,200, with opportunity to approach $300,000+ total compensation
  • Quality and academic incentives
  • Internal moonlighting opportunities
  • External moonlighting and locum work permitted with approval
  • Comprehensive benefits package including:
  • Health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with employer match
