Overview
Project Superintendent I at Shiel Sexton manages field operations to ensure the project is completed on time, with quality standards achieved and zero accidents or injuries. This role develops the work plan and sequence, coordinates all scopes of work, and communicates effectively with all stakeholders. The Project Superintendent reports directly to the General Superintendent and collaborates with the Project Manager.
Responsibilities- Lead and promote the “Expect More” culture that defines Shiel Sexton
- Supervise field operations to ensure the project meets the Owner’s expectations
- Effectively communicate with the Owner, designer, contractors, subcontractors, authorities having jurisdiction, and trades to complete the project on time
- Develop a work plan and sequence to maximize schedule efficiencies
- Promote a safety culture to prevent accidents and injuries
- Collaborate with Shiel Sexton craft employees and subcontractors, understand subcontractors’ work, and provide technical assistance across all aspects of construction
- Build and maintain a safety mindset and safety culture on the jobsite
- Read, understand, and visualize all Project Documents (drawings, specifications, written narratives) to quickly grasp the project scope and how trades interact
- Create and manage comprehensive logistics and trade execution plans using effective written and oral communication with owners, contractors, and engineers; maintain financial awareness in decision making
- Provide proficient leadership to achieve results by planning, coordinating, and supervising on-site functions (scheduling, engineering, material control; may direct on-site craft personnel)
- Support customer focus by assessing internal and external business needs and assisting project management with procedures and standards
- Ensure on-site personnel comply with project procedures, safety program requirements, and work rules
- Accept accountability for productivity of crafts, efficient use of materials and equipment, and contractual performance while upholding quality orientation
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills by identifying complex problems and drawing realistic conclusions
- Maintain a high level of organization to manage multiple issues and resolve them promptly
- Schedule proficiency using daily/weekly look-ahead forms and master schedule updates; participate as a key member of the Schedule Update team using ASTA
- Complete assigned HR and Legal compliance courses on time and by due date
- Other duties as assigned
- Ten (10) plus years’ experience in commercial construction
- Trade-specific background or post-secondary education in construction-related degree (preferred)
- OSHA 40-hour certification
- Ability to comprehend design documents and develop a work plan incorporating all aspects of the project
- Proficient leadership skills to plan, coordinate, and supervise on-site functions (scheduling, engineering, material control; may provide day-to-day direction of on-site craft personnel)
- Understanding of building systems including earthwork, utilities, foundations and structural systems, building envelope, fire protection, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems
- Experience with computer-based project management software such as Procore
- Proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook
- BIM 360 and other 3-D coordination software a plus
40+ hours per week; dynamic work schedule dependent on project status; working construction environment; outdoor/construction site work/office setting; moderate safety risk; deadline-driven; delivery of accurate and completed projects
