Overview

The Assistant Detention Officer Supervisor is a vital position at the Marion County Youth Services Center tasked with safeguarding the welfare of detained youths. Responsibilities include collaborating with the Detention Officer Supervisor to manage daily operations, supervising Detention Officers and Senior Officers, enforcing the Behavioral Management System, ensuring compliance with all training protocols, and assuming full operational responsibility in the absence of supervisory staff.

The role also supports the facility’s security, safety, and compliance with all applicable standards.

Shift options: Second shift (2 p.m.–10:30 p.m.) or Third shift (10 p.m.–6:30 a.m.)

Position Responsibilities
  • Serve in a supportive role in the facility both technically and as a leader, performing various technical and/or administrative tasks to support each security post.
  • Act as a trusted liaison and role model, fostering an atmosphere of care and concern for the safety and security of youth and staff.
  • Organize, oversee, and distribute duties among employees to ensure efficient operation of the Center and/or the assigned Unit Team.
  • Support the Detention Officer Supervisor in ensuring facility compliance with all applicable standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Review, report, and correct situations detrimental to safety, security, or integrity of the secure perimeter; schedule periodic contraband searches.
  • Evaluate individual staff performance, identify efficiencies and deficiencies, develop improvement plans, corrective actions, and track staff progress.
  • Ensure employees under supervision follow Youth Services Center policies, training, rules, and procedures, working with non‑compliant employees to regain compliance.
  • Assist with conducting new‑hire interviews to evaluate candidate qualifications and alignment with facility values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent required; college education preferred. Minimum two years of experience in a direct service role in detention facilities, shelter care facilities, corrections, or other human service programs. Strong knowledge base of the child welfare and juvenile justice system essential. Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to collaborate professionally, employ critical thinking, promote a positive work environment, and maintain confidentiality are required.

Strong verbal and written communication skills and proven computer proficiency are essential. Ability to set strong boundaries with co‑workers to preserve integrity and trust is necessary.

Must be able to work any shift if needed. Marion County residency is required within six months of hire.

Salary enhancements available for Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree holders as well as bilingual skills. Shift differential is applicable for second and third shift.
