We are seeking a dynamic leader for a plant-based environmental position. The ideal candidate will be comfortable interacting frequently with individuals at all levels within the plant, as well as with colleagues throughout the company and representatives from regulatory agencies. This role requires strong skills in resource management, including sourcing and coordinating employees, external experts, equipment, and materials to ensure environmental compliance.

- Responsible for all plant safety & environmental operations and compliance on a 24/7 basis.
- Responsible for maintaining and improving an environmental management system at the plant level which ensures compliance with or exceeds the requirements of environmental laws, regulations, policies, and guidance documents.
- Responsible for managing environmental demands with manufacturing demands (costs, productivity, environmental compliance, quality requirements; safety and sense of urgency)
- Responsible for conservation of resources and reuse/recycling of waste to control costs and minimizing and eliminating waste streams and emissions.
- Responsible for achieving goodwill with employees, community, and regulatory environmental groups.
- Provides Environmental Compliance Direction to 10-25 salaried employees and 105-150 hourly employees.
- Assists in establishing strategic safety and environmental directions; and crafting and implementing safety and environmental policies and procedures that support the business’ short- and long-term objectives. Develops/Communicates the environmental policies and procedures for the plant.
- Ensure consistency in tone and focus on safety & environmental systems in alignment with other facilities.
- Ensure implementation of and compliance with all company environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Management of the Safety Data Sheet database for the plant and provide review of proposed new materials for safety and environmental concerns.
- Implement his/her skills to ensure that Direct Reports are a team with the right distribution of skills and have the leadership qualities to engage the workforce in achieving plant goals.
- Represent the plant as a valuable member of the environmental community in which the plant is located.
- Communicate the need for environmental awareness to management and the workforce to keep them abreast of current and changing conditions.
- In communicating to management and employees, provide information and requirements that are clear, concise, and accurate so that people can concentrate on doing their job.
- Provide employee training to meet compliance and best management practices for safety and environmental requirements.
- Report on key metrics, challenges, and opportunities to Plant Manager.
- Acquire, manage, and maintain all environmental permits associated with the Plant.
- Manage hazardous waste generation and disposal to comply with regulatory requirements.
- Manage universal, special, and solid waste to dispose and recycle in accordance with State and Federal standards.
- Manage recordkeeping and reporting associated with all environmental permits and Federal requirements.
- Manage recycling and reuse systems necessary for plant compliance or operations.
- Track and plan for new environmental regulations.
- Determine how environmental regulations can impact new or proposed company processes.
- Communicate with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental and safety issues.
- Develop strategic relationships with regulatory agencies, attorneys, and consultants.
- Continue to develop their own knowledge, skills, and capabilities.
- Identify learning opportunities and development experiences for utilizing and developing direct reports strengths.
- Working knowledge of Federal environmental regulations and at least one state’s environmental regulations (preferably Indiana).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite:
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other necessary computer programs. - Understanding of environmental compliance issues.
- Basic knowledge of financial concepts.
- Understanding of the engineering of wastewater systems.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering or environmental-related field.
- 5+ years in an environmental-related field
- Environmental regulatory experience
- Operation or management of wastewater treatment or remediation systems
- Interacting with audits and inspections
- Representing the “Company” outside the “Company”
