Job Purpose
To deliver a structured, engaging, and safe karate program that promotes physical fitness, self-discipline, respect, and self-confidence among students. The Karate Coach will provide instruction from beginner to advanced levels, organize gradings and events, and potentially prepare students for competitions while aligning with the school's values and holistic development goals.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Coaching
Conduct regular karate classes focusing on basic to advanced techniques, kata (forms), kumite (sparring), and self-defense.
Adapt lessons for various age groups and skill levels, ensuring age-appropriate instruction.
Emphasize discipline, focus, and respect as integral parts of martial arts training.
Program Development
Develop and implement a structured karate curriculum aligned with student development goals.
Organize grading examinations (belt promotions) in collaboration with recognized martial arts bodies.
Incorporate fitness, stretching, and strength-building exercises to complement karate skills.
Competition & Events
Prepare and coach students for school demonstrations, inter-school competitions, or recognized karate tournaments (if part of the program).
Organize in-school karate showcases, belt ceremonies, and special training camps or workshops.
Ensure students understand the rules, etiquette, and scoring of competitive karate (e.g., WKF standards, if applicable).
Safety & Risk Management
Monitor student safety at all times and enforce safety protocols during training and sparring.
Ensure students use appropriate protective gear and follow dojo etiquette.
Maintain a clean and hazard-free training space.
Equipment & Facility Management
Maintain all karate-related equipment (mats, pads, gloves, belts, etc.).
Monitor the condition of the training space and report maintenance or safety concerns.
Manage inventory of karate gear and make equipment requests as needed.
Student Development & Support
Encourage values of perseverance, humility, and confidence through martial arts training.
Support students with varying physical and emotional needs, promoting inclusion and equity.
Track and communicate student progress with parents and school staff as required.
Collaboration & Communication
Coordinate with the sports department and extracurricular coordinator for scheduling and integration into school life.
Participate in school events, assemblies, and parent-teacher interactions.
Attend professional development and contribute to the school's wellness and holistic education goals.
Qualifications & Experience
Black belt rank (minimum 1st Dan) in Karate from a recognized national/international federation (e.g., WKF, JKA, Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, etc.)
Certified karate instructor or coach license (desirable)
Minimum 2–5 years of teaching/coaching experience, ideally with school-aged children
First Aid and CPR certification (required)
Experience in conducting belt grading exams and preparing students for karate competitions (desirable)
Skills & Attributes
Strong knowledge of karate techniques, philosophy, and competition formats
Passion for martial arts and student development
Excellent classroom management, patience, and motivational skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
High standards of personal discipline and role modeling
Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, international school environment
Desirable (Optional)
Experience integrating martial arts into IB CAS or wellness programs
Ability to organize inter-school or district-level karate events
Multilingual (for communication with diverse parent bodies)
Background in other martial arts or physical disciplines (yoga, judo, taekwondo, etc.)
Experience working in boarding schools or international environments
