Ks.gov, or in person at Kansas Works, 317 N. Penn, Independence, KS 67301, for the position of Police Officer I for work in the Police Department.
Under direction, patrols the city in the enforcement of law and order.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Investigates and prepares reports of complaints and accidents
- Issues citations and makes arrests
- Responds to crime, accident, and emergency scenes as dispatched
- Serves subpoenas and warrants
- Controls traffic and crowds
- Appears in court
- Books and transports prisoners
- Takes fingerprints
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- Ability to learn departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws, regulations, and police literature
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action giving due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation
- Ability to write clear and accurate reports
- Ability to learn the use and care of automobile and firearms
- Willingness to complete extensive training
- Physical agility
- Completion of high school or GED required
- Associate’s degree preferred
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications preferred
- Two years’ experience in law enforcement preferred
- Current Kansas driver’s license
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must possess provisional certification and complete Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center within one year after initial employment
- Must complete any advanced training as assigned, and maintain KLETC certification
- Must be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekends
- Primarily moderate to occasionally intense physical effort is required
- Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, crouch, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time
Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc.
Salary RangeThe salary range for this position is $19.05 to $27.62 per hour plus benefits, depending on experience and qualifications.
3-Year Commitment for New Hires Bonus - $2,500.00 for provisional officers and $5,000 for certified officers
