Position Summary

This position interprets the English and Spanish languages in both oral and written materials. The role will assist and support the implementation of developmentally appropriate educational services to children in the classroom and will travel to all locations to ensure dual‑language learners receive appropriate translation support.

Essential Functions
  • Read or listen to material in one language, determine meaning and context, and convert it into a second language while preserving the original intent.
  • Read and translate documents in the specified language following established rules for word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
  • Render simultaneous oral translation of material as it is spoken.
  • Work with both children and adults.
  • Act as an advocate for the speaker.
  • Maintain strong writing and listening skills.
  • Support teachers in completing ASQ‑SE, ASQ‑3, and child observations for developmental assessment (not responsible for interpreting or scoring early childhood screeners).
  • Support children during play by translating their home‑language words into English, helping them make connections (e.g., child says “roja”; interpreter repeats “red”).
  • Assist Family Educators and Child & Family Development Educators with weekly home visits, socializations, and parent meetings.
  • This position is not a classroom substitute because the role may lack the required KDHE hours for Early Head Start or Head Start substitution.
  • Instruct and support parents in using Positive Behavior Support/Conscious Discipline strategies to prevent and defuse disruptive behavior.
  • Comply with Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Encourage families and community members to volunteer in the program.
  • Respect and support cultural differences and diverse family structures.
  • Engage in required professional development.
  • Demonstrate good work habits such as reliability, punctuality, and adherence to appropriate break times.
  • Attend mandatory in‑service training, staff meetings, and other events as required.
  • Maintain a clean and adequately serviced vehicle if driving a program‑owned vehicle.
  • Keep resource items, assessment items, and related materials clean and organized.
  • Report any suspected abuse or neglect to the appropriate authority – all EHS/HS staff are mandated reporters.
  • Advocate for SEK‑CAP in the community.
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of SEK‑CAP customers.
  • Uphold and promote the core values and mission statement of SEK‑CAP.
  • Support management decisions through actions and words.
  • Work flexible hours as needed to support staff and enrolled participants.
  • Collaborate with local community agencies and providers to ensure comprehensive services for family employment needs.
  • Submit monthly reports, complete account data entry by assigned due dates, and update as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Ability to operate general office equipment such as photocopiers, faxes, and phone systems.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, including working with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully in a mature, flexible manner with the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Resourceful and well organized.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with co‑workers, community partners, and customers.
