Carrier Representative
Job Purpose: The Carrier Representative is responsible for ensuring that all logistic orders are filled with transportation carriers in the most cost‑effective manner. The carrier representative continuously searches to increase RJW’s carrier‑base by sourcing out new carriers and building lasting business relations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Broker available freight;
- Book orders with carriers via phone, e‑mail, and load posting services.
- Contact carriers and negotiate rates to move available freight.
- Contact shippers/consignees for appointments.
- Monitor and participate in driver dispatch when needed.
- Help resolve problems related to shipments when needed.
- Build customer relations.
- Keep customers informed of order status and potential issues.
- Keep sales representatives informed of order status.
- Provide quotes on new lanes when requested.
- Build carrier relations.
- Source new carriers via phone and load posting services.
- Sign up new carriers via the RJW packet and enter details into logistics software.
- Promote goodwill with all carriers.
- Continuously expand the carrier base.
- Secondary duties
- Back up Customer Service when needed.
- Back up Track & Trace shipments when needed.
- Provide proof of delivery (POD’s) to customers when needed.
- Other tasks as assigned by manager.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Knowledge and ability to enter data in logistics software.
- Excellent problem solving and resolution skills.
- Ability to work under pressure situations.
- Ability to multi‑task.
- Detail oriented.
- 1 year experience in the field of logistics and/or transportation.
- High School Diploma required.
- Must be able to communicate, read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent; draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; determine root cause of a problem and corrective action.
- Knowledge of business operating systems, Internet software, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
- Occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds.
- Activate phone systems utilizing keyboards and buttons.
- Speak comfortably in front of others.
- Work in an indoor/office environment; sit and use repetitive hand motion.
- Talk, hear, stand, and walk frequently.
- Work in excess of continuous 8 hours when required.
- Work under stressful situations, maintain accuracy, and concentrate on multiple tasks.
- Read and discern visual images on a variety of media with 20/20 corrected vision.
- Speak and communicate clearly over telephones.
- Maintain physical health as determined by a certified physician with no evidence of controlled substance use.
- Exposed to moving mechanical parts and airborne particles; noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud.
