Primary FunctionThe Scaffold Builder / Insulator A is normally responsible for the layout, figuring material needs, building of simple scaffolding and insulation systems, including layout, materials, installation, and directing other crew members. Duties also include safety, quality and notifying Supervisor of material and equipment needs. This may be a component scaffold builder / insulator but has not demonstrated qualifications of a lead man.
Manhattan Mechanical Services is a merit shop contractor supporting a team working environment. All employees will be required from time to time to perform other duties that they are qualified to perform, outside of this job description and their normal work function.
Work EnvironmentWork takes place in an industrial facility where outdoor weather conditions may be present and where proper PPE is required for potential hazards.
Roles & Responsibilities- Constructs and/or assembles scaffolding in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards, including OSHA.
- Designs and builds normal scaffolding systems less than 50 feet in height.
- Directs other members of the scaffold crew.
- Safe use of hand and power tools.
- Reads prints and understands material takeoffs.
- Field determines measurements, fabricates and installs insulation and covering systems.
- Selects types and sizes of insulation, covering and related materials according to job specifications.
- Consults supervisor or lead man regarding working loads prior to construction.
- Recognizes hazards regarding scaffolding installation.
- Inspects and selects proper materials and locations for scaffolding sites.
- Constructs work platforms using the proper materials.
- Uses wrench or hammer to erect steel system type scaffolding using tubes, ladders and braces held together by fittings such as couplers (clamps) or system connectors.
- Climbs and inspects all completed scaffolds and tags either green or yellow for use by others.
- Housekeeping of job site.
- Prioritizes tasks.
- Gets all tools and materials used by crew to their proper place at the end of shift.
- Keeps track of all components and materials for job.
- Works safely at all times.
- Provides guidance and on-the-job training to the Scaffold Builder / Insulator B and helpers.
- Completes JSA’s.
- Fully participates in health, safety, quality and environmental processes.
- Acts as an ambassador for Manhattan Mechanical Services to the client, other contractors and the public.
- Experience in the petrochemical industry or related field, with two or more years of scaffold building experience or has gained knowledge to perform duties of Scaffold Builder / Insulator
A.
- Climbing properly following 100% tie‑off policy.
- Knowledge of Manhattan Mechanical Services scaffolding systems (system scaffold, tube & clamp, decking).
- Reading and understanding drawings.
- Knowledge of safe rigging practices.
- Completion of appropriate Manhattan Mechanical Services skills assessment test(s).
- Works well as part of a team.
- Provides guidance and on‑site training to lower‑experience crafts to laborers.
- Willing to attend continuous training applicable to job as deemed necessary.
- Completed component scaffold training course.
- Valid driver’s license or other government .
- Compliance with drug and alcohol policy.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairways.
- Ability to carry 50 lbs of tools/materials.
- Ability to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces, towers, drums, vessels, excavations, etc.
- Ability to work extended hours on uneven surfaces, dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel.
- Clean shaven and able to work while wearing respirator and other PPE when required.
- Passes physical examination or pre‑employment test as required.
- Reads and understands safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English.
- Understands site‑specific training and hazards such as refinery and chemical plant hazards requiring PPE (Sulfuric, H2S and HF).
- Undertakes appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with position and location.
