Public Works Maintenance Worker Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Must possess a valid CDL B driver’s license with air brake endorsement and a safe driving record.
  • Performs routine maintenance at various locations, including roadways, municipal facilities, water treatment wells, wastewater treatment plant, rights‑of‑way, other public property, stormwater facilities, etc.
  • Operates vehicles such as backhoe, front loader, skid steer, plow trucks and other equipment during winter to maintain streets and public grounds.
  • Assists with repairs to asphalt involving patching or paving operations on roads and parking lots.
  • Assists with the placement of wet concrete involving repair or construction work.
  • Repairs water main breaks, sanitary backups, lift station problems, hydrant leaks, and flooding.
  • Knowledge in carpentry, plumbing and electrical is beneficial.
  • Collects branches curbside of residences as scheduled.
  • Follows safety requirements, including immediately reporting all accidents, unsafe conditions, and dangerous acts to the Public Works Superintendent.
  • Completes daily work assignments by recording job assignments, performing the necessary and required work in an acceptable manner, and reporting to the Public Works Superintendent the status of the assignment in addition to any issues of concern discovered while performing assignments.
  • Responds to call‑outs after normal working hours.
  • Performs all other duties as required.
Work Environment
  • Moderate exposure to dust, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes and unpleasant odors.
  • Lift and carry heavy objects (50 pounds or more with assistance) both short and long term.
  • Walk up and downstairs, climb ladders and walk over rough terrain.
  • May be required to perform tasks immediately when needed and therefore must be able to work days, nights and weekends.
  • A high degree of confidentiality is required for all Village positions.
  • Work on an on‑call rotating schedule every 8 weeks.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of general construction, repair, and maintenance principles, as well as methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Knowledge of general equipment, machinery, and tools used in construction activities.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation, occupational hazards, and proper safety procedures to prevent workplace hazards.
  • Ability to acquire and retain knowledge related to the methods and techniques of storm sewer, water treatment wells, and wastewater treatment plant repair, maintenance, and installation, and roadway repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to learn proper operation and care of heavy‑duty equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively communicate verbally, in person and over the phone, and radio.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and to exercise judgment, initiative, and discretion to make proper decisions.
  • Ability to address the general public tactfully and courteously, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of operations and procedures to make consistent decisions.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather and variable environmental conditions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely in the workplace, outdoors and indoors, and near moving mechanical parts, as well as moving vehicles.
  • Ability to balance, climb, squat, kneel, bend, crawl, stretch, maneuver in tight spaces, and use hands and fingers to manage equipment to perform duties.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move at least fifty (50) pounds with or without assistance.
  • Ability to perform work requiring close, distant, peripheral, and color vision capabilities.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment consisting of, but not limited to, motor vehicles, generators, pumps, gauges, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, chain saws, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator, and a variety of other equipment.
  • Ability to perform duties with initiative and a minimum of supervision.
