Position OverviewIllinois Department of Corrections is looking to add a journeyman-level carpenter to their Maintenance team located at Western Illinois Correctional Center. This individual should be able to estimate jobs, materials, and time as well as prioritizing these tasks in accordance with the needs of the facility. They will ensure the duties are completed in a safe and organized manner. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
EssentialFunctions
- Performs carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction, or alteration of walls, roofs, ceilings, stairs, floors, benches, doors, windows, desks, chairs, or other similar facility structures.
- Works in the Carpenter Shop.
- Sharpens tools and performs maintenance on equipment used.
- Performs maintenance and repair on buildings and equipment while instructing individuals in custody crew members on carpentry.
- Obtains job costs and estimates to submit to the Stationary Engineer
- Chief. - Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
- Prefers at least five (5) years of experience in using the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of carpentry.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, simple drawings, and/or sketches.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience making arithmetical computations and bulk estimates of materials needed.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience directing or supervising unskilled workers.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience preparing reports of unusual happenings, accidents, violations of rules, and operational reports.
