Research Scientist, Electrical Engineering
The Q-NEXT quantum center is looking for candidates to fill a TERM Assistant Scientist staff position to lead a research program exploring the intersection of superconducting films and novel semiconductor materials platforms — with a particular focus toward applications in quantum computing, sensing, and networking. A successful candidate will be part of a diverse team of scientists from Argonne, University of Chicago, and the broader Q‑NEXT community (academic, industry, and national labs), using their skills to design, fabricate, and measure integrated nanostructures in cryogenic and magnetic field environments.
Emphasis will be placed on establishing, evaluating, and executing the use of novel materials growth techniques, device fabrication, and measurement capabilities present at Argonne, University of Chicago, and Q‑NEXT partner institutions. The candidate will manage multiple collaborations with academic and industry partners to advance shared research goals and will have the opportunity to work with and train graduate students. The candidate is also encouraged to collaborate across related hybrid‑based quantum science projects in Q‑NEXT at Argonne.
responsibilities
- Develop new research directions by identifying emerging and disruptive materials platforms for superconducting resonators beyond silicon and sapphire and the integration of these systems with other solid‑state platforms.
- Seek collaborations within Q‑NEXT that can provide novel materials synthesis techniques and characterization.
- Setup and develop new lab spaces dedicated to cryogenic & magnetic RF measurements of superconducting and hybrid quantum systems.
- Maintain a working knowledge of technological tools as well as maintain developments in the field that will contribute to the success of ongoing Q‑NEXT projects.
- Participate in writing scientific papers, maintaining technical reports and documents associated with the operation of lab equipment, reports on experimental progress, technical developments, and new initiatives.
- Contribute to the ongoing efforts to provide a safe and nurturing research environment. This will include involvement in ongoing workforce development, including mentorship opportunities.
- Knowledge and experience with superconducting qubit and resonator measurements.
- Knowledge and experience working in a cleanroom fabricating nanostructures using a broad range of deposition, patterning, and processing tools.
- Knowledge and experience with microwave and other experimental electronics.
- Knowledge and experience with cryogenics, magnet systems, and vacuum systems.
- Knowledge and experience of laboratory facilities and building infrastructure.
- Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.
- Experience collaborating with others and the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to work normal daytime work hours at the Argonne site. Occasional travel may be required.
- Ability to work independently and without constant direction in the performance of routine tasks.
- RD2 level: academic background in physics, applied physics, quantum information science, electrical engineering, or a related field. For PhD level, at least 3 years of experience with design, fabrication, and measurement of hybrid / extreme‑scale superconducting devices.
