Position: RN or LPN - General Surgery FT
Location: Gibson City

HOURS & SHIFT REQUIREMENTS:
Full time 39-40 hours weekly... 8 am – 4:30 pm.

General Summary

Interview patients before surgical procedures; educate patients on their surgical procedure, preparation for day of surgery/procedure and their recovery phase.

Pre-operative physical assessment of the surgical patient to include, but not limited to, vital signs, head to toe assessment including auscultation of lungs, heart sounds, abdominal, circulation and peripheral I.V. starts. Review pre-op history and complete assessment in appropriate area of the medical record. Physical transportation of patient via wheelchair, cart, or by assisted ambulation to surgical holding area.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities
  • Screen patients per phone or personal interview for any testing or education needs prior to procedure or any environmental factors that may affect patient review.
  • Review all medication with patient to prevent complications or adverse reactions during surgery. Instruct patient on which medications to take or hold before surgery in collaboration with the MD, Advanced Practitioner and Anesthesia providers.
  • Relay information to CRNA of any abnormal pre-op diagnosis or test results.
  • Offer information to patient regarding smoking cessation, advance directives, interpreting services, cancer support information or any other further preoperative or postoperative support the patient may need.
  • Review of patient history and preoperative record.
  • Complete patient physical assessment.
  • Complete preoperative initial assessment and document in the appropriate area of the medical record.
  • Communicate with intraoperative personnel regarding patient transfer.
  • Conduct verbal SBAR hand off communication with intraoperative registered nurse.
  • Orient/precept new staff or students to the department.
