Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Five years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably in a healthcare or Critical Access Hospital (CAH) environment.
- At least 3 years of leadership experience overseeing financial staff, audits, and budgeting processes.
- Expertise in GAAP and governmental accounting principles.
- Experience with CAH cost reporting and Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement.
- Strong leadership skills with a collaborative and team‑oriented management style.
- Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, accounting software, and data analytic tools.
- Strong organizational analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills for engaging with senior leadership and the Board.
- Standard office environment with extended periods of computer use.
- Occasional extended hours during financial reporting periods and audit cycles.
- Requires professional communication and collaboration across departments and with external partners.
All duties must be performed in compliance with federal and state regulations, hospital policies, and confidentiality standards under HIPAA. The Controller will handle sensitive and proprietary information and is expected to maintain the highest level of discretion and ethical conduct.
DescriptionHamilton Memorial Hospital District (HMHD) has an immediate opening for a full‑time Controller. At HMHD our mission is to enhance the delivery of healthcare to our community and the surrounding area by providing accessible quality healthcare services.
The Controller provides strategic leadership and oversight of all financial operations for Hamilton Memorial Hospital District, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Critical Access Hospital (CAH) cost reporting requirements, and applicable federal, state, and grant regulations.
This position manages the hospital’s accounting, payroll, and financial reporting functions while developing systems, processes, and controls to ensure accurate, timely, and transparent financial data. The Controller partners closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and department leaders to provide financial insights, guide decision‑making, and safeguard the hospital’s long‑term financial stability.
Wage Range: $30.00–$43.20 per hour
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Oversee preparation, review, and distribution of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, governmental accounting procedures, CAH cost reports, and grant reporting requirements.
- Manage the month‑end and year‑end close process to deliver timely financial results.
- Oversee preparation of all tax filings, including documentation necessary to maintain tax‑exempt status.
- Coordinate and manage the annual external audit, ensuring full compliance and accurate reporting.
- Develop and maintain forecasting models and cash flow projections.
- Recognize your role as part of the QAPI efforts at HMHD.
- Carry out QAPI roles & responsibilities as assigned.
- Follow established policies and procedures in support of QAPI efforts.
- Support the Just Culture concept and its use to improve patient safety.
- Lead and manage the Accounting and Payroll teams, ensuring accuracy, accountability, and high performance.
- Provide training, mentorship, and ongoing development to finance staff.
- Establish and enforce internal accounting policies and procedures aligned with HMHD’s mission and compliance obligations.
- Serve as a strategic financial partner to the CEO, department leaders, and Board of Directors.
- Lead the annual budget development process in collaboration with hospital leadership.
- Provide financial analysis to support strategic initiatives and capital planning.
- Implement and maintain internal controls to protect hospital assets and reduce financial risk.
- Monitor compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and third‑party reimbursement regulations to optimize revenue integrity.
- Support leadership and the Board with data‑driven financial insights and long‑range planning scenarios.
