Job Summary

The Industrial Hygiene Specialist is an on-site role located in Lemont, IL at the CITGO Lemont Refinery. The position protects workers from occupational and environmental hazards through the application of scientific principles and industry standards. It requires a thorough understanding of comprehensive Industrial Hygiene activities and the ability to independently anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control health hazards associated with the work environment and refinery processes.

The salary range for this position is $101,000-$124,000, commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology, or related technical field plus minimum two years of job-related experience required.
  • Experience in a refinery or petrochemical industry preferred.
  • Ability to interpret sampling data, conduct research, and make recommendations based on the hierarchy of controls.
  • Sound understanding of field sampling methods and instrumentation.
  • Ability to select appropriate control measures from the information contained in Safety Data Sheets.
  • Clear, concise and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong aptitude for computer and various software applications. Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
  • Able to wear additional personal protective equipment (respiratory protection, fall protection, chemical protective clothing, etc.).
  • Able to work from elevated heights.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred but not required.
  • Certified Safety Professional
Job Duties
  • Develop, maintain, and execute comprehensive health risk assessments aligned with the Corporate IH Exposure Assessment Program.
  • Review and update refinery exposure assessments to ensure health hazards are identified and exposure profiles are well characterized (includes qualitative and quantitative assessment documentation).
  • Execute annual sampling plan including area and personal monitoring requirements.
  • Review all laboratory results and maintain data integrity in the IH Database (Cority).
  • Communicate monitoring results to employees and the senior management team.
  • Build and execute annual sampling plan based on the Exposure Assessment Program: manage IH air monitoring equipment inventory and calibration; coordinate with refinery personnel for continuous improvement of the H2S Safety & Personal Monitor Program; coordinate preventative maintenance and repair of emergency response air monitoring equipment.
  • Manage and maintain the Safety Data Sheet system and chemical approval process: maintain the Safety Data Sheet database; participate in Chemical/Hazardous Substance Review for new materials and related Safety Data Sheets; recommend safeguards for materials; conduct hazard assessments to maintain chemical inventory.
  • Provide professional IH support, training and oversight for programs such as Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Radiation Safety, Chemical Specific Programs (Lead, Asbestos, Benzene, Hydrogen Sulfide), etc.; ensure compliance with IH programs, practices, procedures and regulatory requirements; provide IH training for Emergency Response Teams and site personnel responsible for air monitoring during an emergency.
