Caterpillar’s Motor and Generator Components team designs and develops motors and generators that operate across a range of voltages and power classes for Caterpillar machines. As more CAT products become electrified, the need for a full product line of components grows. Strong, cross‑organizational collaboration and technical curiosity are essential in this fast‑paced environment.

Electrification & Energy Solutions (E&ES) Division seeks a Senior Design Engineering Specialist to serve as consultant and company expert for electric motors. This role will oversee motor product development, ensuring all requirements are met through rigorous NTI, NPI, and CPI processes.

As a Technical Subject Matter Expert – Electric Motors and Generators, you will provide technical direction for a team of engineers to deliver motor, generator, and resistor grid designs. Your focus will be on supporting existing production components and launching new products, aiming to improve durability, reduce cost, and provide solutions for challenging applications.

Responsibilities
  • Develop design parameters, performance characteristics, and technical specifications of products and components that satisfy customer needs and advance safety, quality, velocity and cost.
  • Guide the evolution of technical design, project planning, detail design, and development testing. Participate in supplier selection and capability assessment.
  • Monitor, explore, and test new technologies, materials, and components to uncover product or process improvement opportunities.
  • Construct and fabricate prototype equipment; oversee material selection, process optimization and yield, and reliability testing and failure analysis.
  • Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
What You Have
  • Degree Requirement:
    • BS or MS Engineering (mechanical, electrical or related)
  • Technical Excellence:
    • ePowertrain Systems experience and understanding of component trade‑offs and system optimization.
    • Knowledge and experience in product development processes across the product lifecycle (NTI, NPI & CPI).
    • Experience in supply chain, purchasing and manufacturing systems preferred.
    • Experience with multiple RI, CI and E&T machine applications preferred.
  • Analytical Thinking:
    • Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine root causes and create alternative solutions.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking:
    • Ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Project Management:
    • Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor and control projects.
    • Experience managing multiple high‑risk, high‑cost projects and coaching others.
  • Product Development Life Cycle – MFG:
    • Knowledge of product development lifecycle methodology and deliverables. Ability to bring new or enhanced products to market.
    • Experience designing training programs and implementing best practices.
  • Product Testing:
    • Knowledge of product testing approaches and ability to design testing strategies.
    • Experience coordinating test plans and collaborating with design teams.
  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems:
    • Ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in manufacturing or product development.
    • Experience coaching others on troubleshooting approaches and establishing best practices.
