Overview

Under supervision of the Chief Mechanical Inspector, performs technical work associated with the reviewing of mechanical plans to assure compliance with the Florida Building Code, City of Sunrise Ordinances, and other applicable codes. As required, an incumbent in this classification performs mechanical field inspections as needed and a variety of other duties associated with enforcement of the Florida Building Code (FBC).

Responsibilities
  • Performs plan reviews of buildings and structures in accordance with the Florida Building Code (FBC) and the Broward County Amendments to the Florida Building Code, and other codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs field inspections of all mechanical discipline related components, including work and materials, used or installed in new construction, additions, alterations, or repairs as outlined in the FBC and Broward County Amendments to the Florida Building Code.
  • May issue a stop work order under the direction of the Chief Mechanical Inspector and/or Building Official when work is in violation of the Code or creates a hazard to life or property.
  • Investigates complaints of work performed without the required permits and documents any violations found.
  • Assists in the preparation for prosecution of code violators and represents the City at Special Magistrate hearings.
  • Provides superior customer service and correspondence with property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and developers requesting information regarding the Codes in effect, plan review comments, and/or inspections performed or to be performed.
  • Answers technical questions concerning the Florida Building Code for field mechanical inspectors, depending on area of expertise.
  • Performs related work as required.
Education
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED equivalency diploma.
  • Proof of the highest level of completed education must be submitted as an attachment with the application. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)

Experience and Licenses
  • To be eligible for appointment as a Mechanical Plans Examiner, the person must hold the required licenses and/or certifications needed to also be certified by Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) as a Mechanical Plans Examiner.
  • Such person shall be certified by BORA and shall meet at least one of the following qualifications:
  • Be an Engineer in the requested discipline and have practiced for a minimum of five (5) years within the State of Florida; OR
  • Be a Standard Mechanical Inspector serving for a minimum of one (1) year for an AHJ or school board within the State of Florida and comply with requirements to be certified by BORA as a Mechanical Inspector.
  • Possess a current active license issued by the State of Florida, Building Code and Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as a Standard Mechanical Plans Examiner and Standard Mechanical Inspector. (Engineers are exempt from BCAIB certification only.)
  • Possess a current Certificate of Competency or a Professional License in the requested discipline as a Master Mechanical, Mechanical Contractor, Class A air conditioning contractor, or Engineer issued by one of the following:
    Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board;
    Broward County Central Examining Board of Mechanical Contractors and Specialty Mechanical Contractors;
    Miami-Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board;
    Florida Board of Professional Engineers.
  • Possess or be eligible to obtain a current certification as a Mechanical Plans Examiner and Mechanical Inspector issued by BORA.
  • Florida residents: must possess a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Non-Florida residents: must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and obtain a valid Florida driver's license prior to hire.

  • NOTE:

    Required certifications and licenses must be kept current to continue employment in this position.
  • REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES: (Trainees Only)
  • To be eligible for appointment as a Mechanical Plans Examiner (Trainee), the person shall be certified by the BCAIB as a Standard Mechanical Inspector and must hold the required licenses and/or certifications to also be certified by BORA as a Mechanical Inspector.
  • Serve as a Mechanical Inspector for a minimum of one (1) year for an AHJ or school board within the State of Florida and comply with the requirements to be certified by BORA as a Mechanical Inspector. OR
  • Be a Florida Licensed Professional Engineer in the requested discipline and have practiced for a minimum of five (5) years within the State of Florida.
  • Possess a current Certificate of Competency or a Professional License in the requested discipline as a Master Mechanical or Mechanical Contractor or Engineer issued by one of the following:
    Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board;
    Broward County Central Examining Board of Mechanical;
